Nice quality and easy to use.
Baltojeff
It makes nice, flat balls, and I have yet to find a skein of yarn too big to wind with it.
Jeanne
My only regret is that i waited so long to get one!

dont waste your time with those silly underpowered electric winders, this is faster, easier and make super center pull balls of yarn from those unwieldy hanks. make sure to buy a yarn swift too if you plan to wind your yarn at home. the 2 products together are a dream. very durable too especially considering the price.

This ball winder is about twice the cost of similar-looking versions, but it seems to work better. The knock-offs have been reported to have gears that don't mesh, so when you wind your skein, you get a tangle rather than a cake of yarn. This is one of those items you buy once, and then use for years, so getting a decent one makes sense, especially if you knit a great deal. Yarn typically comes in skeins and needs to be wound into cakes for knitting. You use this with an Umbrella Yarn Winder to hold the skein and allow it to be wound off into a ball or cake.

The plastic and metal swifts work pretty well--if you want to spend more and leave the swift up on your craft table, you can go with a wooden version. But the ball winder needs to be a good one. I spent less on the swift (and it's still going strong after a quarter century) but I shelled out for the better ball winder. Also, if you are comparing, I find I want a ball winder with sealed gears (inside a casing) rather than exposed gears. Sometimes, the yarn can get tangled in open gear ball winders. I also found that cheaper ball winders have a softer center post that sometimes doesn't want to stay in the socket. (It's a slighly flexible plastic that you squeeze to set into the socket and it stays in place via some tabs on the bottom of the post.)

A few tricks to make sure it works well for you: align the skein with the yarn guide--don't wind off at an angle. Check the cake as it winds--some yarns want to slide up the center post and fly off. Push it down from time to time to make sure it doesn't do this. Slippery yarns tend to fly off more than fuzzy ones. Go at a sedate pace, if you wind like a maniac (because this IS a boring task) the cake can fly off. Watch as you get near the yarn guide. If you make the cake too large, the strands can get tangled on it.

Bought this as a present for my wife, the knitter. Perfect for making cakes from skeins. Clamps tightly to a table edge, adjustable yarn feed to spindle. Cakes stay together well and easy to get through a lot of yarn in a hurry. Nice quality and easy to use. I'd recommend.

I chose this brand because this is the one i have seen so often in yarn shops. It is easy to use and winds the hanks of yarn into yummy little yarn cakes. My only regret is that i waited so long to get one!

This product was the perfect tool that I could use to get all my yarns in the same sized cakes. The same sized cakes makes the most of my storage areas

I had tried another brand but had to return it because the yarn guide wouldn't stand up. The Royal works great.
