Book Description

July 15, 2000 Studies in Egyptology

The kings of ancient Egypt's first five dynasties were responsible for the creation of a unique and enduring civilisation, epitomised by its most impressive monuments, the pyramids. Yet what do we know about the reigns of these kings? Excavations have revealed much; but Egyptology has always been blessed with another rich source of information, the written texts and inscriptions composed by the ancient Egyptians themselves.

For the history of the first five dynasties, one particular series of inscriptions has always been of prime importance. This is the collection of inscribed, stone fragments known as the royal annals. Now divided between museums in Palermo, Cairo and London, these documents from ancient Egypt have been the focus of countless studies in the century or so since they first came to light. For they seem to record the reigns of Egypt's early kings on a reign-by-reign, year-by-year basis. The information they contain has been translated, interpreted and re-interpreted by generations of Egyptologists, in the hope of achieving a better understanding of the first great period of ancient Egyptian history. And yet amazingly for such crucial documents, no complete edition of all seven surviving fragments has ever been published. Royal Annals fills this gap. The text is accompanied by specially-commissioned, detailed line-drawings of all the fragments.

2.0 out of 5 stars seriously overpriced, June 10, 2002

This review is from: Royal Annals of Ancient Egypt (Hardcover)
Toby Wilkinson, a well-respected young British Egyptologist, has gathered together all known published information about the Palermo Stone and 6 other associated fragments and added a little of his own. The resulting text is spread thinly over some 300 pages including 12 line-drawings.

I was disappointed that such an expensive volume did not even have any photographs of the objects being described. At £20 this book would be reasonable value but at £150 it is an unnecessary extravagance. I'm glad that I borrowed a copy from the British Library rather than buying it.

In contrast, Toby Wilkinson's "Early Dynastic Egypt" is a valuable and not outrageously priced work that should be on the shelves of every Egyptologist with interests in that period.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a serious and complete study, October 29, 2001

This review is from: Royal Annals of Ancient Egypt (Hardcover)
This is the book that many Egyptologists and people interested in the early history of Ancient Egypt have been waiting for!
Wilkinson has collected all known fragments of the so-called "Annalenstein", from the well-known Palermo Stone to the smallest fragment. Despite their many lacunes, these fragments provide historians with a wealth of information about the early kings of Ancient Egypt. The fragments are divided into cells, each of which representing a year in the calendar and listing some important event, such as the death of a king or an important ritual.
Now that all pieces have been brought together, Egyptologists finally have a complete overview of the remains of this important historical document.
