Royal basmati makes a consistently aromatic and slightly nutty-flavored Persian rice (Chelo); I have used this brand for decades. It is a definite advantage for cooks such as myself to have the 15 pound bag available conveniently from Amazon, not to mention the low competitive price. This rice can be used in any manner you would use typical white rice, but it definitely shines when cooked in the Middle-eastern manner. I have never failed to receive raves about the wonderful light texture, nutty flavor and heavenly aroma of Royal basmati rice. And for those familiar with Middle-eastern cuisine, the tahdig (buttery crust) formed is always savory crisp and rich flavored. Other brands may also be delicious but I've never seen fit to check; I look no further than Royal and go directly to Amazon to order it.

Basmati rice is far more flavorful than any other long grain rice you can buy in the supermarket. If you eat rice regularly, and want really great rice, these 15 lb bags are a great value. They end up cost about a fifth of what it would cost to buy the rice in 1-2 lb bags at the supermarket. My family goes through several of these large bags a year. They keep well, and taste great! Since I live in a rural area a couple of hours from one of those membership clubs, Amazon is the best place to get this rice.

Firstly, let me say I am an American, and though Americans usually don't know one type of rice from another, I do. I have traveled around Asia and I have been to Pakistan once, and I acquired a taste for quality rice. I like Basmati the best, and I have had Royal Basmati rice a few time with my Indian friends.

Typical rice in the US is by far too starchy, and this is likely the reason less Americans like rice in general. In Asia, they like jasmine rice, and in the US, people think that there is only 1 or 2 kinds of rice.

I cook my rice in a rice cooker, and I do not rinse my rice first (it takes away some of the nutrients), and I use a little more water than is recommended (about 2:1 water, as opposed to 1 1/2:1). Basmati rice come up fluffy, aromatic, having a pleasant sweet taste, and mixes well with anything like vegetables, chicken, etc. The Royal Basmati rice is better than other brands, like Mahatma.

I am glad that I bought a 15 pound bag, as it cost me $5.00 for a 2 pound bag of Mahatma, A very good price break for sure. I will tell you, if you like rice, but have never tried Basmati, you will be in for a treat. If you like other Basmati brands, you should try Royal. If you cannot use a 15 pound bag within a year, you should pack it in vacuum bags, then it will last forever.

Happy eating!

Great aroma, cooks easily (dipping in water for just 1 hours is good enough for this rice), long grained, non sticky. Basically has all qualities you look for in a basmati rice!

Right now the price at amazon is pretty competitive - 17 for a 15 pound bag! Go buy it!

12/30 Update
===============
Either amazon changed the product or the manufacturer updated the packing. The one i bought and like come in a brown jute bag with a big Royal label on it. Not sure how good this one is.

April 2012 Update

We keep a burlap bag of Basmati Rice (Royal) 20lb on hand. With the current fear of rice shortage, we suggest you get yourself a bag of this rice now.

Royal Basmati Rice brings eating rice to a new level. I first learned about it a few years ago in New Orleans at a combination Middle Eastern restaurant/grocery. The owner there had not heard someone from Mississipi talk before, and he kept following me around the store because he was fascinated with my accent. He asked me if I was from Scotland. He sold me my first bag of Royal Basmati. "This is what we use to feed our customers," he said. I had no idea that rice could taste that good.

Here is the way the Royal people recommend you cook it:
Cooking Instructions for Stovetop

1 cup of uncooked Royal Basmati Rice yields 3 cups cooked Rice.

Measure: 1 cup of rice, 1 ½ cups of water, 1 tablespoon of oil, butter or margarine, a pinch of salt.

1. Rinse measured rice 1 to 2 times or until water is clear to remove extra starch and drain.
2. Place the drained rice into the saucepan and add measured water, oil and salt.
3. Place saucepan (uncovered) over high heat and bring to boil, stir occasionally.
4. Let water reduce slightly below the rice level and the lower the heat to the minimum.
5. Place a tight lid on the saucepan and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes.

Herre is the way we cook it:
We don't wash it. We simply place 1 cup of Basmati rice and 2 cups water in a Calphalon Tri-Ply Stainless-Steel 8-Quart Stockpot with Glass Lid.
