Just wanted to let you know, this clock is enormous. It's the biggest chess clock I've ever seen. One reviewer pointed out that the well for the battery is deap, and she's right--Marianas Trench deap--but I was able to pull out the battery easily enough. It will fit into many of the oversized chess bags running around today, but then again, so will a mid-sized Buick.

Seriously, this is a great clock. It works well. It's easy to read (from 500 yards because it's so freakishly large) and it's easy to set and operate. Overall, I'm very pleased.

Although chess is often played in our house, we do not time it. So my review is based on the product as well as the specific need we had for this unit.

In regards to its intended use, it seems like it would fit the ticket. It is lightweight, easy to carry but has a very clear face with a brightly colored flag and second hand. The unit starts and stops easily with the push of a top button but can also freeze both clocks by keeping the buttons in an even level. The clocks are easy to reset at the back and have a locking clip for each top button.

Now, we needed to buy these because my son has trouble overusing the computer and watching TV. Time passes for him with little concept of how much has passed. So we needed a way to keep track (without being the computer/TV police) of how much he is using each day. One side is TV usage, the other side is computer/video usage. It remains cumulative until he resets it each day. He is in control of keeping track, I don't have to be the bad buy telling him to get off the computer again, and on and on.

It was the perfect solution to our problem. Yeah! Now if I could just get him to wash the dishes...

This is the cheapest chess clock one can buy and you get what you pay for. The instructions are an example of poor translation, with incorrect word usage, grammar and abundance of misplaced punctuation (exclamation points in the middle of a sentence). If you already know how chess clock works, it is not a problem. But this clock is intended for a novice, and it took me a while to figure it out. Next, battery is difficult to install (you need to fit it against a spring in a deep compartment). Battery compartment door is so weak that the battery occasionally falls out during a game, when a button is slapped instead of gently pushed. If you can deal with all that, it is a product for you. Good luck!

This clock is cheap, which means it can be had for very little money, but also that it lacks in quality. I use this clock with my chess club and before I applied a peice of masking tape to the battery door, it kept popping off when students smacked their button. We still have not figured out how to get the second to reset to zero though it seems to imply this can be done in the very opaque instructions.

What a mistake this was getting this unit. I if didn't already know how to use a chess clock I'd be lost the way the directions are written. They read like someone used a phrase book to translate. The clock itself isn't much better. First off, unlike better quality clocks this one has no bell to signal the time running out. One must watch for the drop of the little flag. If they really did go to the expense of making this thing quartz timed, which I seriously doubt, it would only cost a few pennies more to put in a bell. Next up, this clock is obviously made in some overseas sweat shop, the cheap construction of this unit really gives it away. No where in the description does it say made in "wherever" but if you research Royal Crest Wood Expressions you'll be lead to Gardena, Ca. I doubt this clock was ever within 1000 miles of Gardena. Overpriced, misleading, and NOT a good buy. If you are serious about getting a good one, I suggest finding a brick a mortar place that carries chess clocks and get it there. That way you won't stuck with something that's crap. Personally I don't understand the 5 star reviews of this thing at all, I'd bet they are either employees or paid reviews. The only thing this clock is really good for is a chess display in an unused bedroom.

Easy to figure out timer settings (no need to read instructions). Battery does not fall out (unless you don't push it in all the way).

Yes, the precision of digital would be nice, but, not necessary, we're not grand masters ... yet.

Does its job. Not much else to add. A good buy for a cheap chess timer. I wish there would be an alarm of some sort when the time reaches 0 however. Instead, there's a small red flag that drops when the timer reaches 0.
