The Tennyson sugar bowl has a graceful oval shape, with two simple curved handles and a small pedestal foot. The rim of the bowl curves gently inward, and it has a recessed lip to cradle the lid. A burgundy band encircles the white bowl just below the rim; it features a taupe leaf-and-foliage design reminiscent of a William Morris fabric. The burgundy band is bordered on each side with metallic gold, and echoing gold bands decorate the foot and handles. The lid is white with a gold rim and knob handle. Other setting pieces in the Tennyson pattern include a cream jug and a teacup, as well as standard place settings and serving pieces.
Because of the gold trim, Tennyson dishes should not be used in the microwave. Royal Doulton china is dishwasher safe; it can handle water temperatures of up to 150 degrees F. When hand washing, avoid abrasive cleansers and scourers. Avoid stacking in the cupboard, as this might weaken the handle; likewise, in order to protect the rim, do not place upside down in a dish drying rack. The Tennyson sugar bowl measures 7 by 3-3/4 by 5-1/2 inches (with the lid on) and has a 12-ounce capacity. Royal Doulton guarantees that a chosen pattern will be available for two years after initial purchase. --Garland Withers
