Product Description

Max-Gear is an ultra-tough automotive gear oil. It's designed to maximize power and provide unsurpassed protection to heavily loaded gears. It makes gears run smoother, quieter, cooler and longer without overhauls. Max-Gear outperforms other gear oils because it combines the highest quality synthetic oils with Royal Purple's proprietary Synerlec additive technology. Max-Gear is recommended for use in truck, motor home/RV and automotive front or rear differentials, manual transmissions, and lower gear units of marine engines that specify use of an API GL-5 or GL-4 fluid. All viscosities of Max-Gear are formulated with hypoid friction modifiers necessary for use in clutch or cone type differentials. No additional additives are necessary.

Max Gear is an ultra-tough, high performance synthetic gear oil designed to provide maximum protection to heavily loaded gears. Max Gear excels in axles containing open, limited-slip, locker, and spool equipped differentials. Max Gear is also recommended for use in truck and automotive front or rear differentials, manual transmissions and lower gear units of marine engines that specify use of an API GL-5 or GL-4 fluid. Max Gear is non-corrosive to soft yellow metals (brass, bronze, copper) and is safe for use in manual transmissions with Synchronizers.

Cushioning Molecules

The cushioning molecules in Max Gear absorb gear impact to prevent fatigue and minimize wear. Max Gear also significantly reduces friction, which lowers gearbox temperatures, extends equipment life and improves fuel efficiency.

Max Gear outperforms ordinary gear oils by combining the highest quality synthetic oils with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec additive technology. Max Gear makes gears run smoother, quieter, cooler and longer without overhauls. Max Gear is formulated with hypoid friction modifier additive necessary for use in clutch or cone type differentials.

IMPORTANT NOTES: No additional additives are necessary. Max Gear oils contain the friction modifier additive needed for limited-slip differentials. This product is NOT for use in wet-clutch systems, such as those commonly used in motorcycles and ATV transmissions and some marine drive units.

Performance Advantages

  • Maximizes horsepower
  • Extends gear and bearing life

  • Severe service performance
  • Superior corrosion protection
  • Separates rapidly from water
  • Available Max Gear Viscosities: 75W-90, 75W-140, 80W-90, 85W140 and 90
Synerlec Additive Technology

Synerlec, Royal Purple’s proprietary, additive lubricant technology, is the cornerstone of RP’s entire product line. It creates an ionic bond that adheres to metal parts to provide continuous protection even at start-up and strengthens the oil to provide unparalleled performance and protection.

Royal Purple’s high film strength prevents contact between metal parts reducing friction and heat thereby transferring more power to the drive wheels while maximizing the lubricant service life. As well, Synerlec amplifies the already-exceptional oxidation resistance of the synthetic base oils.

Royal Purple remains on the metal surface long after ordinary lubricants would have been squeezed out by pressure and heat. It actually improves mating surfaces by responding to increased pressure with increased viscosity until the metal peaks (asperities) undergo deformation and flow into the low spots. Over time, the metal surface becomes extremely smooth and can even develop a mirror-like surface.

I suspect that this will help somewhat.

My shifts are so silky smooth now & it doesn't make any noise at all from synchro's between gear changes like it did.

This gear oil works great in my 05 F150's front diff.

I didn't have any differential problems or noises that I know of in my '98 BMW 323is, but at 137,000 miles and not changed for at least 100k miles I figured I'd do this and the manual trans fluid. I'll review the trans fluid there (Royal Purple Synchromax) since that made a huge difference. My car runs much quieter and smoother after the fluid changes. I can not really tell if this oil made a difference in the differential since I did several changes at once but it definitely didn't make things worse. The old differential oil came out completely clear and was as much fluid as expected so I'm pretty sure things have been running as expected back there.

After I had already ordered this I found that some BMW owners run Mobil 1 gear oil in the differential since it is said to run cooler there than RP or Redline oil. So I could have saved several dollars per quart and maybe gotten better performance, but I don't drive the car hard so this will do just fine. 5 stars since my car is running so much better that I'll give some credit to this oil.

Update 06/2012 - Several tanks of gas later and my MPG is higher. Since I replaced the trans fluid and this at the same time, not sure which or if both made the difference. Really improved the highway MPG, and it just did 32.09 MPG, doing the relatively flat round trip Los Angeles to Palm Springs plus some other mainly highway driving. My car has been getting 23 to 24 for the last two years and maybe 25 to 26 before that. I've only hit 32 mpg once before in August 2009, and have had only 6 tanks of gas get over 30 mpg in the almost 12 years I've owned the car. Stop and go driving is just slightly higher than before though as the prior three tanks of gas were 23.03 mpg, 27.38 mpg, 24.99 mpg.

I purchased this product to change the differential fluid in my 1970 International Scout. It contains the additive required for the limited slip differential, so that is a bonus.

Sure, there are cheaper oils you can buy for a differential. But from what I have been reading, this stuff is very good and will last much longer than regular "dinosaur" (non-synthetic oil) and will flow at lower temperatures.

I have only done one of the two diff's so far, the rear one, but there already seems to be a slight bit more "grunt" to my tired Scout (an engine rebuild is in the works). I also live in Minnesota, and found my manual transmission, transfer case, and both differentials very "gooey" when the temperature dips down to below freezing. I suspect that this will help somewhat.

On another note, I drained and replaced the fluid in my trans/transfer case with a Castrol "full-synthetic" 5w-50 motor oil, and wow what a difference there! Easier shifts, and much quieter than before. Many think you need to put in a heavy weight oil in these on a truck, but actually many use 50 weight motor oil or standard ATF in their manual transmissions now.

Recently replaced all the oil in my front dif/rear diff/ and transfer case on an 07 Tundra. Went from Mobile1 to this, and noticed a slight improvement in noise.
I'd use this again.

Noticeable difference almost instantly. I was surprised. I am somewhat crazy when it comes to maintenance on my vehicles. I reagularly do the required maintenance before it is required. When I changed the gear lube in my axles (front and rear) it felt like someone had "unlocked" the truck. there was a noticeable difference in drag. The vehicle seems to accelerate easier, and less pedal was required to keep it moving. I knew this was good stuff, but I was pleasantly surprised after changing the oil. I notice very similar results after every engine oil change. no joke.

I've used this as well as the 75W140 Royal Purple in both of my vehicles diffs (Liberty, Aspen). They have worked well as a replacement for the OEM fluid, and have no complaints. This isn't a magical gear lube, so I don't pretend to see all of the claims that I've heard from this stuff. I haven't seen my MPG's go up, and it's not like I've put 500,000 miles on my diffs with this stuff in it.

I have a 1991 Mazda Miata. The differential makes noise that usually can't be heard over wind noise, but I can hear it when I am driving beside a concrete wall on the freeway.

At least I used to be able to hear it.

When I got the car three years ago, I took it into a Miata specialty shop and they determined that it wasn't the gears, but the bearings. They recommended changing the diff with a junkyard diff, which I was not able to do at the time. Instead I have been getting the diff oil changed yearly. That was 40,000 miles ago.

For some reason, I heard positive things about the Royal Purple brand. I now have a garage, so I decided to replace it myself this year. When I pulled the diff drain plug, sure enough there was about 1/8 of metal stuck to the magnet in the bolt and I could see the shimmering of the metal in the draining fluid. I filled it with RP, spun the wheels a bit, drained it, and put in a new fill of Royal Purple.

Now, when I do the same drive next to the concrete wall, I can still hear the diff, but just barely. I am very impressed. While expensive, since the Miata diff only takes a half liter to fill, it is a minor cost (especially compared to getting regular fluid at a lube place). Maybe this diff has another 40,000 miles left.

This has convinced me that there IS A DIFFERENCE when you use a high quality lubricant.
