4.0 out of 5 stars shredder
Tried 2 Fellowes shredders, both of which had defective switches. So I decided to try another brand. So far, the Royal works well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive shredder for future Enron executives
This model is under-powered, and jams when overfed. That said, this shredder is also one of the cheapest shredders on the market. It also has an automatic feeder sensor, so you don't have to turn it on and off constantly-- just stick the paper in and it starts shredding.

To summarize.it works - just the way I like it.

If you only shred a few documents a month...

If you only shred a few documents a month (credit card bills, bank statements), then there really isn't a point in laying out several hundred dollars. I would recommend this one, or similar shredder.

On the other hand, if you have a lot of papers to dispose of, you might want to invest in a higher priced and higher quality model.

My wife purchased this item for my home office two years ago. After two years of light work, this product fails to shred one sheet of paper at a time....Good for one year only...!!!!

Let's face it... the fact is, they all last for a couple of years or so, and then slowly (or often quickly) fail.

Since I came to the (paranoid?) conclusion that shredding things with my name, address and other personal information on them was important, I've gone through them at a faster clip than I'd like. The Royal Jaws was my fifth, and perhaps the least expensive of the bunch.

My logic? Why pay any more than I had to for one if it's not going to last more than a year or two anyhow!

Like other shredders for home and small office use, the Royal doesn't much care for heavy duty use, or trying to cram things down its throat that it wasn't designed for. But if you shred within its stated capacity, the unit performs as advertised.

Perhaps the only drawback is that the shredding mechanism in the Royal uses thin blades, akin to mini circular saws, versus the heavier toothy wheels of some other shredders. But in practice, while the latter seems stronger and more robust, in my experience they don't last any longer.

What I wish I had was a hefty shredder that would digest anything that dared be placed in its intake slot. (I'm thinking something with a 2-cycle gas powered engine, perhaps!) But as long as the typical shredder is destined to be a lightweight, regularly-replaced sort of affair, why spend more than you need to? Get this cost-effective Royal instead.

It is really fast and strong. The basket could be a bit bigger but it serves its purpose.

1.0 out of 5 stars Piece of junk, October 7, 2003

Failed in less than six months. Leaking oil. Probably cut less than 50 sheets of normal business paper. Don't buy this unit.

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk, September 7, 2002

I'v had this thing for nine months and it refuses to shred anything more than one sheet at a time. It never did seven as advertised. Two sheets and it jams. This product is [weak]. This is not from heavy use, either. It's only shredded about 100 sheets total.

If you are looking for a great home shredder that lasts 1-2 years, then this is it. Functionally great, but not made to last a long time.
