Editorial Reviews

Before they even hit a chord, this supergroup has your attention! Their bloodlines tower above all, as the Allman & Neville Brothers cast a magic spell. They said that rock 'n' roll was dead, but they were wrong. Right now, there's something in the air, as Royal Southern Brotherhood drags their thrilling new brand of blues-rock and white-hot musicianship from the Southern States onto the world stage! In the last seven years, Devon Allman has plotted an old-school ascent, crossing 14 countries on tour and watching as fans and heroes alike fall under his spell. There was a Top 10 hit in Spain with Javier Vargas, albums alongside Jack Bruce, and jam sessions with heavyweights like Les Paul and Billy Gibbons. When Devon takes the stage-either with Honeytribe or during cameos with his father and the Allmans-fans are wowed by a guitarist who can be smooth, savage or seismic, but it's in Royal Southern Brotherhood that you'll hear this modern master playing at full-throttle. Not many guitarists could stand toe-to-toe with him. Step up Mike Zito, the blues ace whose ear for melody provides the counterpoint to his wingman's rocking tendencies. Nominated in 2011 for the Blues Music Foundation's Best Blues Rock Award, and winner of 2010's Blues Music Award for Song of the Year, few stars are rising faster. Giving Royal Southern Brotherhood its hip-shaking groove are bassist Charlie Wooton and drummer Yonrico Scott, both heavyweight names in their own right, with Charlie's bass chops celebrated on the Southern jam scene for his sets with the Woods Brothers, and Yonrico hitting the skins for luminaries including the Derek Trucks Band, Gregg Allman, and the Allman Brothers themselves.

RSB is a terrific new band that will appeal to all age groups. The talent of the musicians and the choice of the songs on the CD can't be surpassed. We saw them live twice so far - at the French Quarter Festival in New Orleans and during Jazz Fest week in a smaller venue where their voices could really be appreciated. Get this CD, especially if you are a Cyril Neville or Devon Allman fan, go see them when they come to your part of the country, and tell all your friends!

Royal Southern Brotherhood look set to become the latest sensation out of Ruf Records with the recent release of their self-titled debut CD 'Royal Southern Brotherhood'. Produced by legendary record producer Jim Gaines at Dockside Studio near Lafayette, Louisiana, this newly formed southern 'supergroup' consists of Cyril Neville (percussion & vocals), Devon Allman (guitar & vocals), Mike Zito (guitar & vocals), Charlie Wooton (bass) & Yonrico Scott (drums).

Royal Southern Brotherhood brings together the Allman/Neville dynasties with blues award winner Mike Zito and are billed as the 'Soul of the South' playing amplified soul for the new generation. Right from the outset they are headed for the 'New Horizon' on a driving drumbeat fuelled with incendiary guitar duels and soulful vocals, before a sea of percussion introduces the Santana influenced 'Fired Up!' that really does get the party into full swing. Next come two songs inspired by the great Mississippi river itself, Devon Allman's melancholy 'Left My Heart In Memphis' and the funky Zito/Neville ballad 'Moonlight Over The Mississippi'. All the tracks here are originals except for an interesting reggae remake of The Grateful Dead's 'Fire On The Mountain' which precedes another Zito/Neville song 'Ways About You' that builds throughout hitting all the right notes. 'Gotta Keep Rockin'' witnesses the band back in full flow with Allman unleashed on lead vocals and guitar followed by some more great singing on his 'Nowhere To Hide'. Echoes of another great southern band Lynyrd Skynyrd can be heard on 'Hurts My Heart', a Mike Zito song about the rich/poor divide prior to Cyril Neville singing about his beloved New Orleans on the sassy 'Sweet Jelly Donut'.

They absolutely are the next biggest thing. Please don't confine them to any region. The world will soon know them as RSB. I saw them live mid - April at Baton Rouge Blues Fest and the last night of Jazzfest in New Orleans. They ended both sets with "One Way Out" ABB. Great! Great! Great! Buy this compact disc and you will have to go see them live!

Ok...let me say this. I heard that Devon Allman had a new project a while back but that was it...then I saw the listing for the Flood City Music Festival taking place in my hometown of Johnstown, PA the first week of August. I had seen Devon play with his band Honeytribe and they were fantastic. I saw Cyril play with Galactic the same year. This CD does surprise me...even though I am quite aware of the amazing talent of all the members of this band...seldom are debeut albums this good. I can't wait to see them in August along with Sonny Landreth and Dr. John. I would have given this album 5 stars but I feel that 5 star ratings should be reserved for such albums as Layla, Eat A Peach and Born To Run.

Ordered this CD sight (and sound) unseen... based on the reviews here. From the get-go with "New Horizons" to "Brotherhood"... not a clinker in the batch! You can definitely hear the heritage here... Cyril's input harkens back to all that is golden about the Neville Bros. Devon and Mike scorch the paint right offa their guitars and the groove laid down by Charlie and Yonrico will get you up and dancin' in no time atall!

Pop this puppy into your music machine at your next party and watch yer friends... fun, fun, FUN!

What else can I say? Buy this!

to quote the liner notes,"before they even hit a chord, royal southern brotherhood has your attention. in the u.s. south where music is religion, two rock and roll bloodlines tower above all others. in the saloon bars from mississippi to maryland mere mention of the allman and neville brothers casts a magic spell." with that intro. we are introduced to this wonderful band. i like them for what they do as well as what they don't do. what they do is play great music. what they don't do is try to be more than what they are;;;because it would be easy for these guys to fall in that trap, i.e. be the next "super group" .. see i don't think they care about that. because they don't come off that way. this is as understated a release as i think they could have put out.. very relaxed and not too flashy. yet the playing is spectacular. the first time i saw these guys was a clip of them doing,, one way out,, on youtube. man they rocked it..great intro.. here their playing is clear and confident.. these guys are good, and they know it..all the songs on this cd are solid examples of good ol' rock and roll offered up with a healthy dose of southern style blues..it would be foolish for us to compare them to anyone however,, lets just enjoy watching them open up and grow because the sky is the limit for sure. that said,,i hear influences here from [a]llman bros. to [z]z top.. but if i had to say, i hear more from robert cray to the arc angels, widespead panic to warren haynes mixed in .. really cool and original but also familiar in a good way. they also are good at mixing things up as they play a wide variety of tunes here which makes this release a real pleasure to listen to.they do a great version of fire on the mountain, and i like their embracing many different "world" flavors in their tunes..so enjoy this new band for what the are,, and what they will be,,it's gonna be a fun ride.. i didn't give this 5 stars because i think their best is yet to come.
