IN 2005, THIS IS WHAT WE NEED!!!,
By Mirror Man (Staten Island, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Royal Stink (Audio CD)
In the early 90's,we all know Thee Hyponotics were drinking from the same Detroit well as Mudhoney, the Fluid, Laughing Hayenas et. al. However, Thee Hypnotics were somehow different. They were arrogant, appeared distant yet cool and had the adoration of Thurston Moore, Ian Astbury, Chris Robinson and The Lords of the New Church. As you can see all of the hip, rock personalities took notice. I remember seeing them in New York and they smoked during their set. Absolutely killer! Recently, I read on the net that they played a show in Cambridge, MA back then and had the cajones to open the show with a ferocious version of "Sweet Emotion". How's that for making a statement! Sadly, however, after three albums not much happened other than fading into that distant yet foreign space in time where you know a band / artist will be influential OR ahead of their time. Turn the clock ahead, and you see so many bands copping that Motor City Garage sound (i.e. White Stripes, Von Bondies, the Estrus crowd) and you can see that maybe Thee Hypnotics were not given their due respects. Looking ahead, I can tell you one thing that is a certainty as well as must for any lover of music that is raw, passionate and rock steady. That's the Black Moses. On their second album, Royal Stink, these guys deliver fierce, stinging songs that will make you want to shake your hips and groove to that forbidden beat. Songs like "Thru You" and the title track are so laced with real rock n roll it reaffirms the belief that music can be so heavy yet uplifting. The album is perfect marriage of uncompromising rawness and skilled songwriting that embodies rock n roll history. Hence the name of the band, taken from the great Isaac Hayes album! But for anybody who loves music that is heartfelt, full of conviction and drive you have to get down with this. You won't regret it!
