I love MJD's stories and I enjoyed this one as well, but I am a bit concerned that her heroines are becoming a bit of caricature. As with UNDEAD & UNWED, we have another smart aleck, foul-mouthed sarcastic heroine as Christina is very similar to Betsy (from U&U). Though I enjoy these spirited, tough chicks, they're best in small doses and having Betsy and Christina's stories follow so closely to one another, I was sort of on sassy chick overload by the time I finished this book. Don't get me wrong, I liked Christina and did recognize that deep down, WAY deep down inside her she had a heart of gold, it was just that her surface was so sharp and brittle. I would have liked to see a bit more softness in her and less of the sharp elbows (or should I say tongue!). But that said, this story was still a hoot!Wiseguy Christina fits in perfectly with the off-kilter, wacky and unconventional Alaskan Royals! King Alexander is known to sport an "I'M THE KING - WHO THE HELL ARE YOU?" t-shirt, recline in a lazy-boy in his office and captain a fishing boat incognito (but he's frustrated that he is almost always recognized!). On one such fishing excursion, he meets Christina who's just lost her job as a cook on a cruise ship. With no money and no where to go, "Al" offers to let her stay at his place (she doesn't realize who he is at first). She takes him up on his offer only to discover that he's matchmaking for his reserved, penguin-obsessed son, Crown Prince David. David is about the only calm, sane member of the family and Al thinks Christina is just what he needs. She's cute, smart and will make a tough, no-nonsense queen that David can depend on when the time comes. David, being a prince, has never had to work hard to be with women - they usually throw themselves at him - and he shows no interest in who he marries figuring any woman will do as long as she's healthy enough to give him an heir. But Christina is different and lets him know that he's a little deficient in the romance department. He finds he likes her very much and tries to woo her (he's real cute) eventually winning her over. And so the orphaned American commoner Christina (the "e" is silent!) Krabbe agrees to marry Crown Prince David! From there we watch in amusement as they make royal wedding plans, meet for pre-marital counseling, deal with an ex-boyfriend of Christina's, a family feud over youngest Prince Nicholas, attempted abductions and a life and death struggle for a member of the family. All the while Christina and David grow closer and the staff become used to her unique style. There are some great secondary characters - the whole royal family, the king's right hand man Edmund, Christina's ex Kurt, therapist Dr Pohl and PR rep Jenny. There's enough raw material here for more stories about the Alaskan royals, though I have no idea if that's the plan. If you're looking for a fun, fast read and don't mind swearing and snarkiness, you'll probably like this book as much as I did!

Funny and Cute!,

This review is from: The Royal Treatment (Alaskan Royal Family, Book 1) (Paperback)
It seems that every time I read one of Mary Janice Davidson's books in public, I get weird glances thrown my way. This is because I'm laughing out loud at some of the hilarious situations and phrases Davidson weaves into her writing! Her dialogue is always a laugh a minute, and the characters all seem to capture your heart almost immediately.
Christina Krabbe, after insulting the King of Antarctica and speaking boldly and brazenly to his majesty, was selected by the King to be his eldest son's bride! Though far from an arranged marriage, King Alexander was charmed by Chris' open manner and, well, rather foul mouth. An open person was a breath of fresh air in the stuffy world of monarchies and royal families. Upon meeting Chris, the crown prince David is immediately attracted to her, and soon after meeting, he proposes. Much to David's shock, Chris turns him down cold, in no uncertain terms! Much hilarity ensues with their whirlwind courtship and ultimately, their marriage. Though the plot seems to be a little too short to fill the book, the main and minor characters more than make up for it! Each character is as amusing as the last: Christina and David, the quirky, quarrelling couple; Edmund Dante, the sarcastic, hulking butler; King Alexander, (call me Al) the avid fisherman and keen wit extraordinaire. 'The Royal Treatment' was as hilarious and as charming as the heroine herself, and that is a tall order. If you're in the mood for a light read with thoroughly likable characters, then you'd do well to pick up a copy of this book for yourself!

I snatched this book at the store when I saw it and never regretted it. Christina Krabbe alone and unemployed picked up by a Cruise ship with a crazy, but lovable King with a lot of kids, one who is named David who is eligble and enjoys penguins. I will not go into any more, but to tell you to read and enjoy. I want a sequel Mrs. Davidson, one featuring Alexa, Katheryn, and their youngest brother. I WANT MOREEEEEE OF THIS FAMILY........... Full of humor and fun

This was the first book by Mary Janice Davidson that I have read, and I was not disappointed. It was so funnny. To make up an eniterly new history for Alaska is a little risky but she pulled it off "royally". Christina and David are an unconventional couple but they seem to work. The dialogue is hillarous and intelligently witty. I hope that Davidson doesn't stop with this one book I think the other charcters, such as Princess Alex could have equally reat stories of their own. I highly recommned this book and I mayself can not wait to read other books by Mary Janice Davidson.

Another fun treat from Ms. Davidson!,
This review is from: The Royal Treatment (Alaskan Royal Family, Book 1) (Paperback)
I so love Mary Janice Davidson. Her novels are always a fun treat. I loved Undead and Unwed and Thief of Hearts and couldn't wait to read another one of her books. The Royal Treatment is a hilarious trip from beginning to end! I loved reading Christina's tale of going from a common orphan working as a cook for cruise lines to the potential Queen of Alaska. In this awesome novel, Alaska never became a state and is in fact a country with its own government and a royal family to boot. And Christina's misadventures with the eccentric royal family made me laugh from beginning to end.
There have been complaints that this novel and its characters are caricature at best and that there is too much banter throughout the novel. I've also read here that Christina has an unmistakable resemblance to Undead and Unwed's Betsy Taylor. I agree with the latter part. Christina is edgy and sarcastic, just like Betsy... I couldn't help but notice that the two characters are almost identical. But the novel's satirical language and caricature manner are what make the story special to me. I like a story that can make me laugh, and I pick up fiction of this sort because I expect the same. So, people should not pick up this book and expect something serious or thought provoking. This is a no-fuss romantic read for laughs. And I happen to love banter. Mary Janice Davidson has become one of my favorite authors of the romance genre. I recommend this book as an excellent beach read!

The biggest question I ask when reading a book, especially romantic comedy is "Do I want the time I spent reading this back?" With "The Royal Treatment," the answer is "no." Charming and delightful, it was a quick and easy read that had me laughing from start to finish. The characters are delightfully drawn and instantly likeable. I did find the plotting a *bit* skimpy around the edges, and never really felt there was any serious threat to the couple's ending up together, but the characterizations were so enjoyable that it carried me through and convinced me to try another of Ms. Davidson's books.
If you're looking for a light summer read, this is absolutely the ticket.

In an alternate reality, Alaska was never sold to the US. It became a kingdom ruled by a very unusual family. King Alexander is masquerading as a fishing guide, when he meets Christina Krabbe, an unemployed cook. He offers her a job, but has much more in mind for her. When she shows up at the palace, she becomes his guest, and meets his family. David, the crown prince is obsessed with penquins and keeps them in a habitat in the palace, Alexandria, is beautiful, but thinks everyone is after her money, Alexander speaks only in Haiku, Kathryn doesn't speak at all and throws food, and Nicholas developes and obsession with her underwear. If quickly becomes apparent that Al, as the king likes to be called, wasn't offering her the job she had on the cruise ship, but was hoping that she would marry David and take on the job as crown princess. After a short time she accepts, and the events leading up to the wedding are hilarious.Ms. Davidson's novels are always alot of fun and I really couldn't find out much about this one before I bought it. I am really glad I did. I read it in one sitting, laughing out loud at times.

Another Sassy Leading Lady,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Royal Treatment (Kindle Edition)
When Christina Krabbe unexpectedly finds herself stranded in Alaska, she spends the last of her money on a fishing trip. This is an Alaska, independent from the U.S.A, ruled by a royal family. The King of Alaska happens to be on the same fishing trip, in disguise of course. He is quickly besotted by Christina and decides that she will make a perfect wife for his son, David.
Christina is very much like MaryJanice Davidson's other famous leading lady, Queen Betsy. The similarities are unmistakable; the difference being that Christina is not a vampire. For Queen Betsy addicts-like myself-this is a fun read. Ms. Davidson's strong style is unmistakable and highly entertaining. I really enjoyed this book. |
