Volume two provides organized technical information seldom found elsewhere. The larger size format is ideal for dry-land classroom study. Large illustrations provide the easiest and most efficient method to learn the oldest technical language still used daily worldwide. I highly recommend using volume two as a study guide for the pocket sized volume one. Volume one is a handy manual for on-the-water instruction with its index and glossary of nautical terms.

My father used Royce as a bible back in the 50s; When note taking consisted of using 3X5 card and number 2 pencils. But by today's standards, this old book looks and reads like it was put together by a scatter brain that just likes to draw pictures of boats and amble on about random points.

I had a difficult time understanding it when I first read it over forty years ago but back then I was young and just figured I wasn't smart enough to get the flow. Now I realize the reason it was difficult to read is that the book is truly confusing.

Having said all that, if all you want is something to read casually while rocking in your chair on the porch by the sea puffing on your Meerschaum pipe, then this is the book for you. Otherwise, I'd buy a more recent more organized comprehensive book on sailing, as there are many great options to choose from these days.
