Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is their ECM debut, and already expectations are running high for a trio that for at least two years now has been talked about in European circles as one of Europe's most promising bands. Rruga (meaning journey in Albanian) certainly suggests a group of considerable potential....They have a calculated understated style and an unhurried way of making a musical point - not rushing to the music denouement, but always selecting the most circuitous route, which speaks of a shared musical maturity rare among younger players... Exposing musical meaning is all to this band and the means they use to achieve it is never less than fascinating." -- Stuart Nicolson, JazzWise

Product Description

'The first Vallon trio was formed in 1999, but this current combination came together five years ago after shared experiences on their native Swiss jazz scene together. This is their ECM debut, and already expectations are running high for a trio that for at least two years now has been talked about in European circles as one of Europe's most promising bands. Rruga (meaning journey in Albanian) certainly suggests a group of considerable potential. They have a calculated understated style and an unhurried way of making a musical point not rushing to the music denouement but always selecting the most circuitous route, which speaks of a shared musical maturidty rare among younger players... Exposing musical meaning is all to this band and the means they use to achieve it is never less than fascinating. - JazzWise, March 2011 Rruga is the ECM debut of an exceptional group, bringing fresh energy and new ideas to the piano trio tradition. All three musicians are strong writers as well as original and subtle players. Produced by Manfred Eicher in the South of France (at Studios Ia Buissonne in Pernes-les-Fontaines), Rruga proposes a robust yet uncommonly sensitive music played by a young and well-travelled working band, with years of accumulated experience. This is a piano trio whose gifted leader is influenced, he says, more by singers than pianists, and the group 'sings' in its own unique way with an emphasis on melody, texture, shading, and dynamics.

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Jazz Trio In A Musical Journey". May 10, 2011
Format:Audio CD
The talented jazz trio from Switzerland of Colin Vallon (pianist), Patrice Moret (bassist) & Samuel Rohrer (drummer) has released an interesting musical journey CD (11 tracks) titled 'Rruga'. The great opening track "Telepathy" : a slow piano infused track. Other great tracks include "Rruga" (title track which is a journey in Albanian language. This track has great piano note pickings), "Polygonia" ( great drumkit/piano combination), "Meral" (mid-tempo track with great piano/drums combination), "Iskar" (a great bluesy track), "Noreia" (up-tempo track with great grandpiano note pickups & drums combination), "Rruga, var." (up-tempo variation of the great title track) & "Fjord". Okay tracks are "Home" (a slow track) & "Eyjafjallajokull" (eerie sound inspired track sounding like a musical score track). A solid track/gem/stand-out is the closing track "Epilog." : a wonderful standing bass/piano/drum combination. This is my favourite track from this great CD. On overall, this is a great musical journey/exploration by the talented jazz trio, a highly recommended CD listening.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Folkloric Jazz October 25, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As for the disc itself, I agree with everything M. Mareba has said (including track highlights, espec Rruga & lowlights, especially Eyjafjallajokull), agree whole-heartedly with his/her rating & would only add that the music more than once reminded me of the Tord Gustavsson Trio in overall mood & intent whilst remaining wholly original & not at all derivative.
However, the real bonus for me was that for ONCE an ECM album actually came with decent and informative liner notes - I hope someone from ECM out there sees this & takes heed!! Although most of the essence of these notes is captured in the Amazon product description, they are still well worth a read, especially regarding the folk music origins of most of the tracks. What would possibly have been even more interesting is if at least one of the tracks included some original words/vocals?
But this only a minor matter - the disc is definitely worth checking out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thought-Provoking January 18, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Without going into too much detail, the music on this CD must contain some of the most poignant and gorgeous levels of personal expression that can be found in a piano trio. Generally speaking the music is impressionistic, imbued with melody and very accessible; tempos are slow to mid paced. Individuals solely partial to high-octane (lots of notes played fast) piano trios are probably not going to find this CD enjoyable and are advised to try some sound samples. However, those inclined to the sounds of Stefano Battaglia, Tord Gustavsen, Bernardo Sassetti etc., Rruga fills this particular piano trio niche exceptionally well.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars -- Vinyl Please! September 14, 2011
By DGF
Format:Audio CD
5 stars. I really LOVE this album. Highly recommended. As usual, a gorgeous recording from ECM, which turns out some of the best-sounding compact discs in the music industry. Side note on format: ECM offers only a limited number of their releases on vinyl. In light of their audience, one wonders why ECM has not turned back to vinyl in a big way. Perhaps Mr. Eicher has already spoken on the digital vs. analog debate, but speaking as one long-time customer, I would order a lot more of ECM's catalog if a high quality vinyl pressing option were available. I routinely search Amazon for current and past ECM releases on vinyl, and almost hesitate to purchase CDs even if I like the music.
