Sometimes you hope that by spending for good German technology, you'll get the perfect product. Well, this isn't perfect, but I did pit over 1.5 lbs of cherries in about 10 minutes, so I'm not complaining too much.

I've been using the low priced Progressive International Cherry-it Multiple Cherry pitter and although it's pretty low tech, it was working better for me than the hand-held single fruit pitters. Still it wasn't ideal and with some big batches of cherries to deal with I decided to spring for this fancy pitter.

Let me first say, it is indeed very well made and offers a guarantee of 10 years. In fact, the parts fit together so snugly, I had trouble with disassembly at first to clean it. The instructions are not very good, mostly pictures, but not very useful ones and the verbiage is even less helpful. It took me some time to figure it all out, but once I did it all made sense. All parts but the internal spring are dishwasher safe, but since everything rinses clean easily, I see no need in that.

Like I said, I pitted a lot of cherries fast once I got into the rhythm. After I figured out that it was most efficient to feed one cherry at a time rather than load the hopper, it also did a good job of removing most all pits. If you fill the hopper, the cherries tend to bottleneck trying to feed into the pitting area and then you have to break up the logjam manually, plus the occasional cherry would shoot though to your capture receptacle with the pit intact. That was a pain and I was getting annoyed with the thing until I switched to single loading by releasing one of a handful of cherries at a time into the hopper, pushing the plunger, then dropping another. That worked pretty fast and nearly all the cherries were successfully pitted.

I mostly love this cherry pitter... it works fantastically, gets a lot more pits out than the standard plastic types... but even though this is advertised as "stainless steel", it's mostly the pretty bits that are metal, the rest is plastic, although very strong and durable plastic. (It "feels" like it will last a long time) It is SUCH a pain in the butt to empty pits out of. A LOT more design could have gone in to it. Sometimes the metal separates, sometimes the plastic separates - it doesn't seem to be consistent. To empty it, it requires two people - one to hold the base down and one to pull the top off, as a full thing of pits creates a vacuum that is brutal to pull apart.. but works great on large cherries such as Bing or Queen Anne... haven't tried pie cherries yet - I think they'd be too small and pop right through the hole.. but that's ok, bing make better pies anyway! but overall, I'd still purchase this one over all the other plastic ones out there..

I saw this advertised in a kitchen store for $ 80. and passed on it. Enter Cherry season this Summer.

I was pitting green olives with a pairing knife, and thought after ruining half, that there has to be a better way. Looking on Amazon.com I saw this item for sale at $39., with free 2-day delivery, and ordered one. Assembly, when it arrived took 5 minutes after we read the manual, and washed and dried the parts.

Thus far it passed the acid test of very small, green olives. 1 full jar pitted, with only 2 lost in the pit well. Onto Cherries, with my wife and I doing one box in exactly 8 minutes. We have no problem adding the cherries to the automatic feed cup, providing they are dry. The booklet states it will do Plums too, with additional parts not included. We enjoy plums in jam and baking, so we shall see.

TECHNIQUE:
Don't be shy pushing the spring loaded plunger to remove the pits and release the fruit. If you are hesitant with the plunger, it may clog. In other words, Think German.

Use a flat plate or low bowl to catch the pitted fruit. I have a low stainless gravy boat that fit perfectly.

This device is a good looking, well made, but is primarily a plastic kitchen tool. I suggest hand-washing versus dishwashing.

Great product!! Works every time. There's a learning curve in cleaning the device, but once you've learned the ins an outs, no worries.

You have to go so slowly, and line the cherries up just right or else they clog. It really does not work well, and I am back to my single cherry pitter, while this sits on the shelf and collects dust. It's also pretty hard on your hand and wrist, not useful at all.

I love it so far, but have only used it for a minor baking project. Hoping it maintains! Delivery was quick and it was packaged really well, which was a concern. It seems to be sturdy and it operates as indicated. Another reviewer was absolutely right about not needing to be shy with the plunger; the spring assembly is well-equipped to take strong hand. I'm very enthused!
