Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K-A boy in a submarine sinks below the surface to face an array of colorful sea creatures: "Peering through/a kelpy haze/at rainbow fish/and manta rays./Waving to a/whiskered shrimp./Floating by a/blowfish-blimp." All is well until he comes upon a shark. Then, he immediately bids adieu to the animals he has encountered, and the vessel surfaces safely-in the tub. Acrylic spreads show a teeming, cartoonlike undersea world in vibrant turquoise. This imaginative bath-time book excels at blending story and pictures.

From Booklist

K-Gr. 2. Wandering through Mack's brightly hued marine scenes and wavy currents of words, Ashman's bubbly verses track the observations of a young explorer in an orange submarine, as he goes "waving to a whiskered shrimp / Floating by a blowfish-blimp," and the like, on the way to a face-to-face encounter with a "sleek and speedy . . . SHARK!!!" that sends him zooming back to the surface--of his well-stocked tub. Replete with rhyming words and cartoony but recognizable sea creatures, this cheery voyage, a debut for illustrator Mack, makes exuberant reading aloud, both pre- and post-bath time. John Peters

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Illustrations, March 3, 2006
By
This review is from: Rub-a-Dub Sub (Hardcover)
My two year old loves this book, we have to read it every night. She loves the bright pictures and the rhymes. She really gets the concept of it being the boys imagination and she likes finding the "real" bath stuff in the pictures as well. This author and illustrator also teemed up for Starry Safari which we read right after this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Marine Adventure, June 4, 2011
This review is from: Rub-a-Dub Sub (Hardcover)
This is an inventive and poetic story about an underwater sea adventure. Though it is meant for young children, the book features some relatively complex vocabulary ("a kelpy haze," "cleaner wrasse", "dabs" (type of fish), etc.). The rhythm of the story sounds so good and the pictures are so fun to look at that kids won't care if they don't understand every word, but this book might also be a whimsical way to expand a young child's marine vocabulary.
