Rubbermaid Antimicrobial Dish Drainers

I recently bought this to replace my previous, 15-year old Rubbermaid dish drainer, which I loved, but which had gotten rusted. This one is not the same design as the previous one. On the original, there was a strip of wire that ran horizontally around the basket, about one inch from the bottom. This strip kept glasses above the edge of the counter. The new design is flimsier and less sanitary, with the edge of the glasses resting on the counter. You also need to be more careful putting the glasses on the prongs on the side, as they could drop against the edge of the counter and crack.

The rubbermaid dish drainer in black is big enough to accomodate a large dish rack for a full load of dishes. The price--in comparison with offers from other companies--is great and it looks fine in the kitchen. My only concern is that water doesn't really drain into the sink since the slant/design doesn't force the small accumulations from dripping dishes downward. Therefore, I do have to clean/wipe it regularly. It's a great size, though, and a nice deal for the price.

Don't sweat the negative reviews; there is really nothing wrong with this drainer. It could use more storage space for silverware, but aside from that, it's ideal.
I've seen a lot of people claim there is a HUGE "hole" that dishes can fall out of. This is retarded. There is a SMALL space, which is blocked by the silverware holder, but no dishes could possibly fall out, through this. As for the silverware holder, itself: it would be nice if there were two, but there is nothing wrong with the one included; it is of average size and normal utensils stand up in it, just fine, so long as you're not trying to jam anything huge, in there.

This drainer is well-made, functional, attractive, and VERY reasonably-priced. No, Rubbermaid "doesn't make 'em like they used to," but that's true of virtually any product, from any brand. There are no crazy design flaws, here; just an economical way of holding your dishes as they dry. You could probably find a better dish drainer, but you will not find a better one anywhere NEAR this price.

You would think "what could go wrong with a dish drainer?" But Rubbermaid has succeeded in producing an inferior product to...to their own previous version of the same model!

We had the exact same model from 10+ years ago (now beyond cleaning with rubber cracking) and it has thicker metal and a thicker coating. Now both are thinner, and the wire rack is flimsy, particularly noticable when hanging glasses off the tabs provided, and after attaching the silverware cup on and then off the rack only once it ripped off the plastic coating! My new product was immediately damaged.

The other caveat is that the earlier version had a well placed solid corner cup for silverware, and this one has a less secure side cup, which is positioned exactly where you may want to place leaning bowls. Now, as I am using my older sturdier corner cup on the new rack, there is a portion of the rack missing on that side, so dishes can slip right through.

It's a shame that they didn't have a problem, but Rubbermaid has fixed that! I would have been happy to shell out a few more dollars (this was about $7) to get a better product.

I had an older, white Rubbermaid dish drainer and decided to replace with a new drainer as the other was stained and showing its age. The silverware holder on the new strainer is located in a center of one side rather in a corner as it was with my old drainer and in the photo of the item on Amazon. This change makes the drainer more useful - the silverware is no longer in the way. And with the new design you can slide the silverware holder to an optimum position - super idea. Plus the new design allows you to distribute your silverware rather than cram all into a small corner cup.

Hate it, hate it, hate it. Nothing larger than a teaspoon or small fork will stay in the cutlery container without easily falling out of the top, and after a couple of years the rubber coating on the rack starts to crack and the rust starts to show. I've been annoyed by Rubbermaid products, and particularly this dish drainer, since 1971, so this isn't a brash review. Do yourself a favor, pay the price and buy a fantastic dish rack on Amazon.com like the simplehuman KT1025 System Dish rack (pricey but worth every dollar) or OXO Good Grips stainless dish rack and sink mats. Their designs are attractive and will blend with any décor, and they are well made and will last for years. The money you save now on the Rubbermaid product will soon be spent on frequent replacements and on aspirin for the headaches this cheap piece of garbage causes.

For some reason they left a GAPING HOLE where the silverware basket hangs on the NEW dish drainer.

In the photo you see they don't show the end of the basket that has a GAPING HOLE.

I tried using my old corner silverware basket with this drainer, but the dishes fell out of the BIG GAPING HOLE at the other end of the basket.

The new silverware basket DOESN'T hold the silverware up, and it DOESN'T keep the dishes from falling out of the GAPING HOLE in the dish drainer.

WHO is designing dish drainers? Do they actually WASH dishes?

I have been buying Rubbermaid dish drainers since I got my first apartment back in the '70s and took their quality for granted. In the last couple of years, Rubbermaid has cheapened this simple product to the degree that it no longer works like it should. The newer drainers are not as heavy, the prongs are not tall enough to hold a larger dinner plate upright (anything over 10" will tip) and their angle is wrong, the oblong flatware caddy is an abomination in all ways mainly by not holding utensils straight up so they can dry with fewer water spots - not to mention knife points getting stuck in the oval slots, and the vinyl coating is inferior.

Shame on Rubbermaid for dirty-ing its name by offering such a crappy version of one of its original brand-building products. It's obvious Rubbermaid has no respect for its American consumers and it's too bad that young adults just starting out will not realize that this product is junk. I will not buy another Rubbermaid drainer; I prefer to pay more for something that will perform and last longer.

I searched endlessly for a replacement for my very old Rubbermaid, white wire dish drainer, to absolutely no avail. I searched and perused reviews for a zillion replacements but in the end couldn't imagine that all these up-to-date metal contraptions could handle my great aunt's delicate glass dishes as gently as they require. Finally I found one that nearly matched the dimensions of my large drainer with its trustworthy surface. I am happy and admiring as all get out every time I settle my dishes in for a good drain and dry. But, a star was lost on the new silverware holder and configuration. I do get set in my ways, indeed I do, and my long prep knives and little wooden dishes don't fit as well anymore what with the skinny utensil drainer getting in the way and refusing to rest in the corner as my knife prop. Oh well ... still, I am again, a happy household dishwasher.

This is not a flimsy plastic dish drainer. It is very well made and holds a lot of pans.
