These silicone spatulas are the highly recommended ones from a leading cooking magazine. So I purchased all these Rubbermaid professional heat resistant spatulas and spoonulas (9 ½", 13 ½" and 16 ½" in length). I use the spatulas primarily for folding ingredients in a mixing bowl. I prefer to use the spoonulas for scraping a bowl when I want to scrape out every last bit of cooking goodness (the edges of the spoonulas are thinner and the cupping of the spoonulas both help to scrape bowls, pans, and pots clean). The Rubbermaid professional plastic handles are more comfortable to use than the wood handles on my heat resistant spatulas and spoonulas. Also, the silicone heads of my wood handle ones are stiffer than the Rubbermaid professional ones. I think that little bit of flex in the Rubbermaid Professional silicone heads helps me scrape cleaner.

I have yet to use the little notch on these spatulas for scraping under the opening of jars (I think they were intended for use on the commercial kitchen size jars) since the spatulas are 2 ¼" wide for the 9 ½" to 2 ¾" wide for the 13 ½" and 16 ½" long tools. The handle ends have small prongs that look like they are to help keep the entire spatula or spoonulas from sliding into a work bowl.

I have some older Rubbermaid ones and they are definitely not stain resistant: the paprika has permanently stained one of the mixing spatulas. I was able to remove the paprika stain from the Rubbermaid professional spatula using dishwashing liquid and a nylon Scotchbright like pad. Also, my older Rubbermaid heat resistant spoonula developed a split at the tip and has warped a bit.

Although rated very highly by Cooks Magazine, which I love, I find this to be way too stiff and I am not able to scrap bowls of batter, etc. It is good for using while heating on the stove for items that need constant mixing. It has not stained or cracked in the 6months I have used it.

I've used Le Creuset spatulas for years, but after a few of mine succumbed to various disasters I decided to follow Cook's Illustrated's recommendation and try out the Rubbermaid spatulas. This size is equivalent to the Le Creuset medium size and is great for everyday use. It's the size I reach for 9 times out of 10, only occasionally do I need the larger size (Le Creuset Super or Rubbermaid 13 1/2).

These are stiffer than the Le Creuset spatulas. I haven't decided yet if that's good or bad, I suppose it is both. I've had times where it was good and times where it wasn't.

The plastic handle isn't as pretty as the Le Creuset, but it is a heck of a lot more practical. It won't split or warp or break like my Le Creusets have done. And it is sealed to the blade, so no need to pull them apart for cleaning and drying like the Le Creusets.

As Cooks Illustrated pointed out, the flatter blade on the Rubbermaids is nice, makes it easier to clean it off on the edge of a bowl. The Le Creusets have a more pronounced bump along the center of the blade that leads to a bunch of extra swiping to get most of the food off the blade.

All in all a great spatula and in a drawer with one of these and three or four Le Creusets I'll reach for this one every time.

I am a devout follower of all things Cook's Illustrated. I never buy any piece of kitchen equipment without first consulting their reviews, and always buy their recommended products. I bought 2 of the 16 1/2 inch rubbermaid scrapers about a year ago, and was happy with the heat resistance, but did find the size of the silicone scraper a bit cumbersome, and the handle isn't the most ergonomic thing in the world. After months of use, it has some nicks in it from scraping the contents out of tin cans, which is disappointing. But the reason I finally felt the need to write a review is the lack of odor resistance. It is so bad that I actually went back and bought a 13 inch and labeled it "Baking" so that it was used exclusively for items that weren't going to make it smell. Imagine licking the cake batter off of a spatula and having it taste like onions and garlic. Yeah, that happened. You might be thinking I don't know how to adequately do dishes. Trust me, I do. I obviously tried the usual soaking, scrubbing, running them through the dishwasher. I soaked them in baking soda for 24 hours, then tried a mixture of vinegar and water. Nothing I've tried will get the smell out of the silicone. They are going out with the trash on Monday because they are actually smelling up the drawer in which they are stored. The 13 inch I bought exclusively for baking snapped at the point in the handle where the handle meets the scraper when I was stirring chocolate chips into cookie dough. I'm back to replace them with CI's runner up (and best buy), the Tovolo Silicone Spatula.

Very sturdy, comfortable, and cleans well. I've been using it almost daily for the past couple months and haven't had any discoloration. I purchased both the 9 1/2 and 13 1/2. The 9 1/2" is great for sautes and small meals, while the 13 1/2" works very well for baking and mixing ingredients in larger bowls.
