5.0 out of 5 stars Just the right amount of flexibility and so far is pretty stain resistant

3.0 out of 5 stars Scraper
Although rated very highly by Cooks Magazine, which I love, I find this to be way too stiff and I am not able to scrap bowls of batter, etc. It is good for using while heating on the stove for items that need constant mixing. It has not stained or cracked in the 6months I have used it.

These silicone spatulas are the highly recommended ones from a leading cooking magazine. So I purchased all these Rubbermaid professional heat resistant spatulas and spoonulas (9 ½", 13 ½" and 16 ½" in length). I use the spatulas primarily for folding ingredients in a mixing bowl. I prefer to use the spoonulas for scraping a bowl when I want to scrape out every last bit of cooking goodness (the edges of the spoonulas are thinner and the cupping of the spoonulas both help to scrape bowls, pans, and pots clean). The Rubbermaid professional plastic handles are more comfortable to use than the wood handles on my heat resistant spatulas and spoonulas. Also, the silicone heads of my wood handle ones are stiffer than the Rubbermaid professional ones. I think that little bit of flex in the Rubbermaid Professional silicone heads helps me scrape cleaner.

I have yet to use the little notch on these spatulas for scraping under the opening of jars (I think they were intended for use on the commercial kitchen size jars) since the spatulas are 2 ¼" wide for the 9 ½" to 2 ¾" wide for the 13 ½" and 16 ½" long tools. The handle ends have small prongs that look like they are to help keep the entire spatula or spoonulas from sliding into a work bowl.

I have some older Rubbermaid ones and they are definitely not stain resistant: the paprika has permanently stained one of the mixing spatulas. I was able to remove the paprika stain from the Rubbermaid professional spatula using dishwashing liquid and a nylon Scotchbright like pad. Also, my older Rubbermaid heat resistant spoonula developed a split at the tip and has warped a bit.

I just realized that one of the reasons why I don't like my similar sized 13 ½" sized silicone spatulas and spoonulas with wood handles: the working end is heavy so the tool is not as balanced as these Rubbermaid Professionals.

For most home kitchens, I'd recommend buying the 9 ½' and 13 ½" size spatulas and spoonulas. There is a 16 ½" size that is very long and the silicone head is the exact same size as the 13 ½: (14" actual) size (4" X 2 ¾").

PROS: The silicone heads have just the right amount of flex to scrape cleaner than similar sized scrapers and spoonulas. The handles are more comfortable and sized well.

CONS: A bit expensive but you a get a tool likely to last.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rubbermaid Proffessional 13 1/2" spatula/scraper, February 24, 2009
By
I usually follow and agree with almost everything America's Test Kitchen rates highly or #1. I am not a professional cook, but this spatula is a little stiff for my liking. I do like the large surface area of the blade, it makes turning and folding larger quantities easier which allows you to disturb delicate batters as little as possible.....such as when the recipe calls for mixing until just combined. I am finding myself using my existing slightly more flexible tipped spatulas more on other recipes. Additionally, as I believe ATK says in their reviews, Rubbermaid could have made the handle a lot more comfortable. The handle is too thin, too hard and not very ergonomic by today's stanards. Overall I gave it a 4 star rating, but as a backup and for a specific designated purpose only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed!, July 21, 2008
This spatula is just what I needed to use with my Kitchen Aid mixing bowl. With its long handle I can reach to the bottom of the bowl and the large flexible head does a great job of cleaning off the sides of the bowl. So far it has not stained and has withstood the heat of a hot skillet---plus kept my hand away from the heat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great everyday spatula, September 22, 2008

This review is from: Rubbermaid Commercial Products FG1962000000 9 1/2-Inch High Heat Scraper (Kitchen)
I've used Le Creuset spatulas for years, but after a few of mine succumbed to various disasters I decided to follow Cook's Illustrated's recommendation and try out the Rubbermaid spatulas. This size is equivalent to the Le Creuset medium size and is great for everyday use. It's the size I reach for 9 times out of 10, only occasionally do I need the larger size (Le Creuset Super or Rubbermaid 13 1/2).

These are stiffer than the Le Creuset spatulas. I haven't decided yet if that's good or bad, I suppose it is both. I've had times where it was good and times where it wasn't.

The plastic handle isn't as pretty as the Le Creuset, but it is a heck of a lot more practical. It won't split or warp or break like my Le Creusets have done. And it is sealed to the blade, so no need to pull them apart for cleaning and drying like the Le Creusets.

As Cooks Illustrated pointed out, the flatter blade on the Rubbermaids is nice, makes it easier to clean it off on the edge of a bowl. The Le Creusets have a more pronounced bump along the center of the blade that leads to a bunch of extra swiping to get most of the food off the blade.

All in all a great spatula and in a drawer with one of these and three or four Le Creusets I'll reach for this one every time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very handy, though a little long, January 9, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased this item on the recommendation of America's Test Kitchen, whom I usually agree with whole heartedly. This is a wonderful product. It is sturdy not floppy; it's always a plus that it is heat resistant. The handle is a bit long, but then again, when you have a large batch of cookie dough, etc. it's good to reach into the bowl. The advantage over my Le Crueset scapers is the handle is not wood--the whole thing can go in the diswasher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but get the smaller size, March 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As I often do when it comes to kitchen tools, I first looked at the review written by America's Test Kitchen (Cook's Illustrated magazine). Both this spatula and the Tovolo Silicone Spatula received "highly recommended" ratings in 2008. The Tovolo spatula seems to be suffering quality problems (according to reviewers) so I purchased this one.

I love it...it's sturdy yet flexible, and is up to the task of folding chocolate chips into a large batch of cookie dough while still scraping the bowl clean. I use it with my largest bowls - I bought the 13 1/2 inch model and it's quite large. For home use I recommend getting the 9 1/2 inch version and if you still need a bigger one then also get the 13 1/2 inch spatula.

I've run this spatula through the dishwasher each time I've used it and it's come out fine. No staining, no warping, and the top is still firmly attached to the handle. It's pricey for a spatula but it's professional quality - you can feel it when you hold it. It won't be the only spatula you'll need (it's far too large to get into jars or scrape melted butter from a prep bowl) but it's definitely worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great "big" spatula, September 22, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The smaller Rubbermaid is a better size for everyday home use, but when you need a larger spatula this is the one to reach for. It is very similar in size to the Le Creuset Super Spatula. For all the reasons I mentioned in my review of the smaller size I prefer the Rubbermaids to the Le Creusets. When you need to clean out a large bowl of batter or dough or the like this is the spatula for you.
