I am somewhat of a lunchbox connoisseur. I have gone through many. Lunch is my most important meal of the day, literally making or breaking my mood.

First, I used paper bags. Mom knows best. But these are disposable, and get thrown away, and are bad for the environment. They also offer little protection or insulation for my lunch, and no spillage or ziploc bag crush/pop countremeasures.

Then came the soft coolers. These are nice, but hard to wash, and do not protect my PB&J and bananas from being smushed. Upside: you can fit "just a little more" in them and still zip it closed.

Then I got a hard cooler: but it was either too big, or the inside was too small. I either looked like I was going to a BBQ or carried around a cooler so I could have small juice and a sandwich only.

Then I got this thing that was invented in India supposedly. It has three containers in a thermos. This was great, but I couldn't use it for sandwiches, and it couldn't hold drinks (except in a bowl) and did nothing to protect my bannanas and sandwiches which still had to go in the soft box. Awesome for leftover day though.

Then I found this, one morning in Hawaii at my friends house. I promptly found the model number and wrote it down. Insulated. Hard. Durable, and protective of my food. No silly sliding top like an igloo to get stuck on anything too tall. Big enough to hold a six pack of soda, snacks for the beach, or lunch if I packed carefully...most importantly..thin walls. I don't know who at rubbermaid came up with this, but he or she should be promoted. Unlike other coolers with half inch thick walls, these walls are thin and not overly bulky. I can still carry enough food without looking like I am going camping everyday. I have no need for another lunch box. Ever!

My previous lunch bag was nylon on the outside, velcro closure, the inside was a soft plastic liner, and there was filler/padding between the nylon and the liner (to help keep things cool). The velcro eventually stopped sticking, and the liner became cracked in several places (causing some of the filler to fall out now and then). And it was a bit small for what I was packing. The soft plastic liners seem to be the norm among most lunch bags. It was a vertical shape and that made it hard to clean (the soft plastic liner was hard to lean as well...since it was not flat/rigid).

This time I wanted something more durable and easy to clean. And that is the primary reason I got the Rubbermaid.

The outside measurements are: (in inches)
7.25" tall
7.25" deep (the lip around the cooler is the deepest point--7.5")
9.25" long (the lip around the cooler is the longest point--9.75"; and the handle makes it a little longer)

The inside dimensions are:
5.25" tall (plus another 0.5" under the lid, since the lid is concave)
6" deep
8.5" long

It is the perfect size for my breakfast and lunch: here is what fits:
* 6oz yogurt
* 11oz fruit in tupperware
* 4oz breakfast burrito, or 5oz sausage/egg muffin
* sandwich (square bread slices)
* carrot
* banana, or 11oz fruit in tupperware
* cookies
* small bag of raisins
* spoon

After packing all that, there is still space for more items (one more yogurt, burrito, and sandwich). Since there is about 0.5" of space under the lid, there is extra space to toss in a pack of blue ice. I have a water bottle that I leave at work, so I don't pack a drink in my cooler.

I have taken this lunchbox to work nearly every day for a few months.

The box is very sturdy and it does offer a large enough area to put quite a large amount of food items if you desire to do so. I personally pack an ice pack, a small container of peanuts, an apple, a sandwich, a granola bar, a cheese stick, a small can of v8 juice, and my toothbrush/toothpaste.

Cleaning the box is pretty easy and the lid stayed closed even when strapped on the back of my motorcycle. When I did have a minor spill the liquid eventually found its way to the groove cut into the bottom of the box which contained the mess but was a bit of a pain to clean properly.

My only major complaint is that, even with no other items in it, the box is not long enough to fit any refillable water bottle that I own. While the "soft" style lunch box that my wife brings to work has no issue. (Of course I wouldn't want to strap a soft lunchbox to my bike so I guess it's a "toss up.")

I got this cooler because my work lunch bags got smelly and gross and weren't easy to clean no matter how well I tried to keep them nice because they held moisture. This is near perfect by comparison. It holds a small lunch and with the addition of ice packs, keeps it cold all day in my office. I'm not sure it would be as effective outdoors or in a hot place, but it keeps my lunch and snacks cool all day if I put in a few ice packs.

If it latched closed more securely, I'd give it five stars- as it is, it can open up if tossed around the car or upended.

Mostly though, it is great because you can really clean it out to keep it odor free. Take the dishes out of it as soon as you get home and leave it open overnight and it stays free of old lunch stench quite well.
