5.0 out of 5 stars HERE'S HOW TO MAKE THEM LAST (ALMOST) FOREVER
We have five of these that have lasted for over ten years. How did we get them to hang in there that long?

The secret is to freeze them completely flat, so that both sides of the package are completely smooth with no wrinkles. If you freeze them JUST ONCE with any crease in the plastic, it creates a weakened seam which ultimately will break, and you're on...

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it.
I had 2 of these and the first one started leaking (staining) blue after 3 months of use, and the other one after 6 months of use. Not fun to have blue all over my hands, lunch bag and food. I think they should last must longer and the dye should not be so harsh.

We have five of these that have lasted for over ten years. How did we get them to hang in there that long?

The secret is to freeze them completely flat, so that both sides of the package are completely smooth with no wrinkles. If you freeze them JUST ONCE with any crease in the plastic, it creates a weakened seam which ultimately will break, and you're on your way to an inevitable mess.

I use a plastic Tupperware low-profile rectangular container, place the Blue Ice bag inside, then place another same-size Tupperware container on top of the Blue Ice bag, which flattens it, and place them in the freezer. It helps if you put something in the top container for weight/compression; I use a can of frozen orange juice or a bag of frozen veggies. In about an hour, a pack is frozen solid enough to be removed, and the process repeated with the next pack.

Also, when a pack is frozen completely flat, it fits better into lunchboxes, etc.

It's a little extra work, but if you've ever had one of these packs fail in a locker or your car, you know that blue liquid is some nasty stuff to clean up.

These also aren't the greatest thing to discard into landfills, so you're also doing the environment a favor by extending the lifespan of the pack.

I'm happy with this product, it's just the right size for taking lunch to school or work. However, the package will ultimately leak after some weeks or months of use and will permanently stain the lunch bag. My solution: put it inside a quart-size zip top bag.

2.0 out of 5 stars Leaks too much, April 18, 2010

They do a good job of keeping things cool, but they tend to get worn and start to leak. I purchased the plastic blocks that rubbermaid makes, and they don't leak, in fact they do a better job of keeping things cool and for a longer time.

Disappointed in this ice. It melts too quick and you have water at the bottom of your lunch box by 10am. I purchased 3 of these and all 3 do the same thing. Now I need to buy another brand. Do not waste your money on these.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blue Ice, December 27, 2010

This item is very useful for my lunch cooler & beer cooler. It is nice not to fill a bottle or container every time & put it in the frig. It is so easy just to remove them from your lunch pack & just put in the freezer.

My only complaint is the shipping amount to receive the item? I should have looked closer @ the cost of shipping & I never whould have purchased them. Shipping was almost as much as the item itself. blue ice

5.0 out of 5 stars mixed feelings, June 18, 2011
This review is from: Rubbermaid Inc Blu Lunch Pk Ice 1002-Tl-220 Ice Pack (Kitchen)
I've used these for years for headache and other kinds of pain. They are much less expensive, last longer, and retain the cold better than similar items sold in pharmacies. I do keep them in plastic bags because they leak blue goo if dropped while frozen or rolled over on... but so do the expensive ones. Unfortunately, I just can't find them in stores anymore so I was excited to find them on Amazon. But seriously, the price of the item is $.89 and the price of shipping that item is $4.99. Even I am not that desperate.
