5.0 out of 5 stars This girl can write., September 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rubies On The Lawn (Audio CD)
The product of the Texas prarie and a long tradition of great Texas artists, Trish Murphy is an ingenue in size 3 leather pants. Anyone who has seen her live performances has been electrified by her energy, her simple love of the music, and her uncanny ability to connect with the audience. Rubies on the Lawn is a jewel in her writer's crown. Beautifully crafted lyrics settled into tunes that you will carry with you the rest of the day. The songs reflect a soul-searching innocence that is both refreshing and real. And her little-girl voice is fence-post rough, just enough to put the edge on her songs. Don't miss this terrific performance by an emerging Texas artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Rubies" Grows on You, February 22, 2000
This review is from: Rubies On The Lawn (Audio CD)
The more I listen to "Rubies," the more I love it. I have been listening to it on the way to work (a 30 minute commute) for the last few weeks. It's rare that I find a CD that stands up to repeated plays. It seems I can't get enough of "Johnny Too Blue" and "Vanilla Sun." And "These Boots" nearly puts me into a trance each time I hear it! After checking out this CD and Trish's web site, I saw her perform in Houston. She was incredible live. She reeks charisma and sounds amazing. I liked her so much I hired her to play for our company at an executive event!

4.0 out of 5 stars These Boots Were Made For Rockin'!, December 30, 1999

On her second album (her first with national distribution), Trish Murphy beats the rock'n'roll pants off virtually every major league femme-rocker (stand BACK Melissa and Sheryl!) with a sly, sexy, SMOKIN' set of sizzlers perfect for machine-tooled highway drivin'! Key cuts include a winning remake of "These Boots Are Made For Walking" and "Me Behind The Wheel", a wonderfully upbeat tune with lots of personality! Nice jagged guitars, propulsive drums, expert production and THAT voice! Absolute joy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Trish get's a harder edge!, August 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Rubies On The Lawn (Audio CD)
Maybe, as she says, her music has a harder edge because she is now writing about her adult years. However I think it's the addition of Billy Harvey to the band. Saw her last week in Little Rock and even the older stuff has more of a rock sound to it. New CD is fantastic!!!

Johnny Too Blue-about her uncle's inability to come all the way back from his Vietnam War experience.

Me Behind the Wheel- Three On The Tree What A Scene!

Sunday- About a robbery of an IHOP gone bad...based on a poem written by Trish's Swat Team neighbor. AND a great version of an old Nancy Sinatra song it's just called BOOTS on the CD. Nancy SAID she was leaving the guy, but probably would have come back for a diamond bracelet. Trish not only is leaving she WON'T be coming back and will probably kick his A** on her way out!

She is writing and singing better than ever!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great disc but a little bit of a major label sellout, July 26, 1999

I am a big fan of Trish's, having seen her several times in person and I have literally worn out my copy of her Crooked Mile CD. Upon first listen, this disc is a bit of a disappointment, especially the last piece, a symphonic version of Vanilla Sun-what's that all about? But I have listened to the disc several more times and it is growing on me but I still like Crooked Mile better. Nonetheless, this is better than Sheryl Crow or 99% of the other music that is out today. Her vocals are much better on this disc but the music seems a little overproduced to me. But I still love ya, Trish!

5.0 out of 5 stars Singer-songwriter blends country and rock her way, January 13, 2005
This review is from: Rubies On The Lawn (Audio CD)
Trish's music is hard to classify. It isn't country but there are definite country influences. Trish knows how to rock but I wouldn't call this rock music either. Frankly, it doesn't mater what you classify this music as (probably alt-country), it's the quality that counts.

Trish wrote or co-wrote most of the songs, but proved she can do covers too with her great cover of Nancy Sinatra's These boots are made for walking. Her own songs focus on a variety of topics, even including a shoot-out (Sunday). I confess that the lyrics of Trish's own songs are sometimes difficult to understand though that won't matter if you play this as background music.

The album title is taken from a phrase in one of the songs (Vanilla sun), a ballad in which Trish sings about how it's raining rubies on the lawn - one of those hard-to-understand lyrics.

So maybe the lyrics are a bit strange but most people don't listen to the words anyway. The music is great and Trish's voice is amazing - that's enough to make this album well worth listening to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyrics that speak volumes, August 12, 1999
This review is from: Rubies On The Lawn (Audio CD)
Once again, Trish has proven that she can write songs with the best of them, painting pictures in your mind with her words more vivid than reality itself. Ever since I first heard of Trish Murphy from the AWARE Records Compilation #5, I fell in love with her music.

I hope the world hears more of Trish because her music is worthy of it. Buy this CD. And visit her web site, you won't regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Trish rocks!, August 7, 1999
By
This review is from: Rubies On The Lawn (Audio CD)
Having seen Trish perform live only once I can only hope I'll see this lady perform more over here in Holland and/or anywhere in Europe. In the meantime, I can listen to her rock on 'Rubies On The Lawn' and 'Crooked Mile' in my stereo. This lady knows how to put heart & soul into her music. She has a great voice and she knows how to play the guitar! If you're going on a long trip and you're looking for great 'road'-music to take with you in you carstereo, this is it! Buy it and you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Trish Murphy did it!, August 2, 1999

If you like good music and strong female voices, GET THIS CD. Songs that range from love songs to songs about Vietnam veterans. Some describe it as "Sheryl Crow with a Country Twist" I think it is much more than just that. She has her own sound, a great way of songwriting, and I am already looking forward to het next album.
