20 YEARS LATER STILL ONE OF THE ALL TIME BEST !!!,

This review is from: Rubik's Cube (Toy)
Back in the day, like 1981 or 1982 when this "game" 1st came out, Me and my fellow Jr. High friends all ran out to the local toy stores to get the Cube (there were no Nintendos and Playstations back then). After a while (a long while, like months) we had all figured out how to solve it and we lost them amongst all the other games we had. About 8 years ago I saw one laying around, so I picked it up. It took me a while, but I solved it again and kept the cube. Funny thing is this little thing is so addictive I constantly tinker with it, about once a month I let my kids mess it up so I can solve it and stay sharp on the technique (there is a technique, once you figure it out). When they get older I want them to learn how to solve it and think it out. It is the kind of toy this generation needs desperately but will probably never catch on again in light of computers, playstations and X-Box's. I would highly reccomend the Cube to anyone 10 years or older. The only reason I knocked durability is because the newer versions of the cube seem stiff to turn, I remember the ones we bought back in the early 80's were much easier to turn.

I bought this thing because a guy at work claimed he could solve it in under a minute. I called his bluff. He did solve it in under a minute. He did point out to me that the stickers are kinda cheepo. I do have to agree. I played with it for a few weeks. But I never can get to far or he will wander by and solve it for me. However after about a month of tinkering with it the stickers started to peal off. The color part is still there but the protective part of the sticker is rolling back. I was able to dig up a older one (about 2nd gen). Its stickers have yet to peal off and its 18 or so years old!

Frankly, this toy is junk. If you really use it, the stickers fall off in two weeks. If you oil it to make it easier to use, the stickers fall off in about a day. Too bad. The manufacturers killed this really great toy, which WAS the perfect introduction to abstract algebra for kids.
