4.0 out of 5 stars "My cat can eat a whole watermelon."
Here's great little nugget of weirdness. Crispin Glover plays Ruben Farr, a reclusive slacker of sorts who lives in the motel owned by his mother. He spends a lot of his time listening to Mahler, dressing in 70's clothes, and not much else. His mother threatens to take away his beloved music unless he makes a friend, and so enters Ed Tuttle (Howard Hessmen). Ed has...

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Overrated by its Followers, but Interesting
This is an odd, rather slow and uneventful movie, but when it came to a close I was sorry that it was over. My initial reaction was that the movie seemed to fall short of what it aspired to. Several days after viewing it, however, I realized how much it stuck with me. The movie creates its own rhythmic pace, and has a kind of cyclical, hypnotising effect, much like that...

This review is from: Rubin & ed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Here's great little nugget of weirdness. Crispin Glover plays Ruben Farr, a reclusive slacker of sorts who lives in the motel owned by his mother. He spends a lot of his time listening to Mahler, dressing in 70's clothes, and not much else. His mother threatens to take away his beloved music unless he makes a friend, and so enters Ed Tuttle (Howard Hessmen). Ed has his own problems. See, he a part of an organization that makes money through some sort of pyramid scheme, and Ed has been less than successful in recruiting new members. Ed also suffers quite a bit of verbal abuse from his ex-wife, Rula, played perfectly by Karen Black.

Ed happens to meet up with Rubin, and they make a deal that if Ed will drive Rubin out to the desert and help him find the right spot to bury Rubin's dead cat, Rubin will attend one of organizations' meetings. Things go awry, as they tend to do, and things start to really get weird.

A low-key comedy that a number of people I know thought was stupid, but if you enjoy bizarre characters and offbeat situations, then you'll really like this movie. Hessman is really funny playing off Glover's usual oddness. This movie may not be for everyone, but after watching, I did find myself quoting a number of lines from the movie like "I am the king of the echo people!", "Man, it is el warmo out here.", or "Why don't you keep your hands off other people's refrigerators!" Not available on DVD yet, but I'll keep looking...

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruben & Ed, April 27, 2000

This review is from: Rubin & ed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
HEY WEIRDO--Ruben & Ed is a hard movie to find, but if you do happen across it buy it, rent it, steal it, watch it, over and over and over; it gets funnier each time. The movie details the relationships between two lost souls, maybe three if you count the dead cat, travelling through a Southwestern dessert in search of...their minds, their car, "success"? You really need this seminar...oops, movie. Crispin Glover is awesome as Ruben, an ecclectic 70's throwback who happens to like cat sqeaky toys and platform shoes and Howard Hesseman who plays a convincing Ed--a wanna-be motivational real estate recruiter who's going through some personal dilema's with a crazy ex-wife and a life going nowhere until he meets Ruben. Great dialog and scenary, I can't imagine my life without it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wildly funny and touching, July 10, 2005
This review is from: Rubin & ed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is one of the most original and wildly funny movies I have ever seen! But it is more than that. There is a moment when Rubin and Ed finally bury the cat where Ed looks at Rubin and sees him crying and realizes that however strange Rubin is, he is another human being in anguish because he has lost the only thing that ever loved him. Later, Rubin sees the way Ed's vicious ex-wife treats him and, possibly for the first time in his isolated life, tries to reach out to comfort another person.

And, by the way, I live in fear of the day my VHS tape wears out. VHS players are only about 2% of new player sales and will probably go the way of the 8-track very soon. Will someone PLEASE transfer this gem to DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rubin & Ed is a flatteringly divine and inspirational epic!, February 15, 1999

This review is from: Rubin & ed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Crispin Glover and Howard Hesseman give an astounding preformance in what is one of the most comically insightful movies of our generation. Critically acclaimed as one of the movies you never saw but wish you had, Rubin and Ed takes the 5 stars in any cult movie enthusiast's book. To those of the intellectually challenged sort, Rubin will quickly become the long lost family member you never had. Ed on the other hand is a valiant role model to those striving to make a better way in life. A movie with a reoccurring one-liner like, "Andy Warhol sucks a big one," speaks for it's own comic genius. If you have the chance, this movie is worth the high price, and will entertain the family for hours... over and over again. Crispin Glover is definitely, "The King of The Echo People!" and Andy Warhol still does, "suck a big one."

4.0 out of 5 stars Andy Warhol sucks a big one, July 15, 2005
This review is from: Rubin & ed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Very interesting but strange buddy movie. This movie isn't for everyone but it's a must have for Crispin Glover fans of fans of oddball comidies in general. Unfortunately this is not out on DVD and it probably never will be. Couldn't tell you why this has never been released on DVD, everything else basically is. This is definately worth having and it's getting hard to find so you might want to grab this classic cult comedy while you can.

Their are two movies that you can just watch over and over again. Better off Dead and of course Rubin & Ed. You have so many things to make you laugh in this movie, A guy who hasn't left the 70's, a waterskiing cat, the truth about those get rich schemes, and of course the line "I am the king of the Echo people". I've see only 1 out of 100 people that did not like this movie. It is insanely funny and a great way to show the difference of the left and right side of or brains. A must must see

5.0 out of 5 stars Dysfunctional Buddy Flick - not for everyone, March 9, 2004

This review is from: Rubin & ed [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The first time I watched this film I got a cramp from laughing. This movie is sick and wonderful, disgusting and beautiful, heartwrenching and ridiculous, peanutty and chocolaty. This is a movie to watch with a group of friends, lines from this film will be entered into the group dynamic..."My cat can eat a whole watermelon!" This movie is not for everyone though. If your sense of humor is fragile, if you are a fan of Andy Warhol, a member of PETA, or are in time share sales: you may be offended. Some folk will not get it, while some folk, like me, will spend time writing glowing reviews about it. I can only hope they rerelease this piece of cinematic genius on DVD soon.

Ruben & Ed is a diamond in the rough. I rented this movie one day because I could find nothing that I wanted to see, so I took a chance. My friend and I took it home and have been hooked ever since. It is right at the top of my 10 best movies. It is refreshing, and surreal. Howard Hessman (Ed) reminds me of the majority of realtors I have ever met. There are so many subtle jabs of humor that it is mind boggling... the knock on the door of the prospective client at the exact second, and the quick last second urgent fart immediately prior to the door opening... a big smile for the client.... it explains Ed's entire downward slide in life. And Ruben, not one to have his orderly life altered is thrown into a tailspin by the untimely demise of his cat, and Ed, and the desperate journey to return life to the way things were.
A great movie to experience.
