Book Description

January 27, 2012
Former street kid, Ruby McKinney reaches out to runaways through her medical clinic in the worst part of the city, but her escalating battle with a gang leader puts this work in jeopardy. Tom Masters, Ruby's first love, is now on the right side of the law and at the center of a dangerous DEA sting involving her clinic. Tom's disappearance ten years ago broke Ruby's heart and rattled her faith. As their romance rekindles, memories of what it cost to love him flood her with fear. As Ruby's battle with the gang ignites a firestorm of danger and betrayal emerges from within her own camp. With Tom's life in the balance and her world cast in shadows, can Ruby trust God as she once did...or has she strayed too far to ever return?

More About the Author

Raquel writes across several genres including YA Steampunk and Gothic Mystery. Always looking for another adventure in which to partake she is never seen without her notebook.

As a teen she couldn't get enough Bradbury, Asimov, Poe, or Matheson. They informed her love of science fiction, mystery, and thrillers. One of her favorite stories is Something Wicked This Way Comes. It changed the way she looked at scenery and the world around her.

After finishing school, marrying, and starting a family, Raquel realized she'd fallen away from her love of the written word. She began in earnest in 2000 to hone her craft and connect with other authors and book lovers.

She connected with an agent and after signing with him, sold two series. One, a suspense series that also sold into foreign translation, and the other a dark gothic mystery. Currently working on YA Steampunk, she endeavors to bring the same edgy characters and thrilling pace to the project.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruby Dawn March 1, 2012
Format:Paperback
Wow, Raquel Byrnes! This was an excellent book. When I first read the description for this book, I didn't know if I would like it. It didn't sound like my kind of book, but I like to explore new authors and I'm so glad I do because I really liked this book. There is a very delicate balance with a book like this. The romance and suspense have got to be done just right in order for the book to be interesting and real. Raquel has done a marvelous job with that balance. Romantic suspense is not a genre I read a great deal of. I am very picky when it comes to this genre and I feel that Raquel is among the great suspense writers of Christian fiction.

In order for a book to hook me from the start, I really want it to just the right amount of action and suspense without feeling too much tension. And, the romance has to be believable. I don't like when the romance is just thrown in for the sake of romance. This book had all the qualities that I look for, including a terrific Christian message. Ruby Dawn is a definite winner in my opinion. I'm going to add Raquel Byrnes to my "must read" author list.

She was named after the way the morning sky looked on the day that she was found, a beautiful Ruby Dawn. She was only eight when she believes her life began because she doesn't remember the life she had before that. Living in foster home after foster home until the one person who was going to promise her a new life, died tragically in a car accident. Now she spent the remainder of her time in Dresden Heights Detention Center until she could begin life outside on her own instead of being a ward of the state.

Ruby is now working as a doctor trying to keep her medical clinic alive despite threats from a local gang that wants to use her clinic to filter drug operations through. When she refuses, the threats against her become more violent until her life hangs in the balance. When she finds a man injured in a dark alley, she learns that the man who broke her heart ten years ago, she is about to find out what God's plan has been for her all along. If only she can manage to stay alive long enough to find out.

Ruby Dawn by Raquel Byrnes is the second book in the Shades of Hope series that I received compliments of Christian Fiction Blog Alliance for my honest review. I didn't have an opportunity to read the first book but after this one, I know I'll be checking that one out. This is truly a book about forgiveness, second chances and unconditional love as the author weaves her readers through a dangerous thrill ride to the very end. Slowly the story weaves together and you can see that no matter how far Ruby tries to run from God, He still has her in His sights to bring her back to Him. I rate this one a 5 out of 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars recommended read January 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Ruby is an ex street kid, put into a detention centre as a teen through no fault of her own. Tom, a kid she meets there. Their story is woven through a series of flashbacks throughout the book. When they meet again, Ruby is a doctor, holding down a job in a hospital, refuge and a clinic. Tom is now bad kid made good and undercover. Just as he reappears, Ruby's life falls apart.

This book had me hooked from the beginning. Tossing the reader straight into heart stopping action, Ms Byrnes skilfully keeps you riveted to the pages. A whirlwind of a ride, this book is everything and more that the back cover promises.

If you only read one book this month, this is the one to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story with a sexy hero, but no sex :( March 10, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When I get over the lack of steamy scenes, I can say this was a great story. Intense and driving. The sexual aspect is something I expect in a romance, so it didn't meet my expectations. But it was romantic and the mystery/suspense kept me guessing, on the edge of my seat.
Tom comes back into Ruby's life and seems like he's the bad boy who's just going to break her heart again. Instead she found closure to questions from the past and was able to see a real future that involved true love, instead of just existing for others. I was genuinely teary-eyed as Ruby realized the scale of Tom's sacrifices for her. She'd been his bright light, he was her protector. It was beautifully done.
My 4 stars is for the lack of heat. Perhaps that's not fair to the author - I don't know the norms for Christian romances (which, by the way, was inspirational and not preachy). I just picked up the other book by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars True Love Does Conquer All January 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Ruby is a foster kid giving back to the community. A doctor with a clinic for low income families, she is threatened by local gang/drug activity. Fate brings Tom back into her life, a fellow foster kid and her first love.

I love reading the theme of long lost love turning out to be true. All the angst and hormones of teenage years are too poignant to be meaningless - Tom and Ruby were lucky enough to find each other early. It's just unfortunate that real life got in the way for as long as it did.

I connected with Ruby's controlled emotions, her unwillingness to be seen as weak, and her fight against a system designed to make her dependent. Tom was just hot. The way he invaded her space, his presence a wreaking havoc on her carefully maintained stoicism -- I fell in love with him a little myself. Without giving away the plot, their relationship goes full circle, full of the same adventure and danger it had been since day one -- only this time Ruby knows the sacrifices Tom is willing to make for her.
