I enjoyed this book very much. If you even like RPGs or fantasy stories, you'll love this book. This book was made before the Shattered Light game, just for those of you who don't know, (mister book-is-an-advertisement) as the book has a form in the middle talking about a beta version of the game being released or something like that. Anyway, if you get this book...

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I picked up this book because of Richard A Knaak who had written many good novels. However, I was disappointed with this book, because the characters are not really well developed. Each had a very simple 'script' that reads like a computer role-playing game. The evil Ganth just alternates between "Bwahahaha..I'm so evil" and "The shard! I MUST have...

4.0 out of 5 stars I want more Theron Kain!, August 11, 2000

As usual Richard delivers the goods in this novel. The world is filled with characters you grow to care about greatly as you read. The storyline was a bit predictable, with some good plot twists. Not his best but, still far above the rest in his league. If you are a Dragonrealm fan, or just a Knaak fan in general you owe it to yourself to read this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Knaak's best, but better than us lowly mortals deserve., November 16, 1999

Well as one would expect writing a fast book within the constrants given by a shared setting are hard to overcome, but Richard Knaak does this with grace and finesse. Granted that this book cannot compair with the Dragonrealm books or such, but this is still a good read and I recommend to it to anyone who can appreciate such. Any of you who disliked this book a great deal should check into some of Mr. Knaak's other works, and bear in mind that he is more magic based than combat oriented, and read the Dragonrealm series. If you can read his best stuff and still dislike him, then go on home to the mental ward and leave us good sane folk alone. *Grin* Just kidding, but the critics will have to explain it to me sometime.

I MUST have the Shard! ". The lead characters Jarric and Ferlyn are you atypical good-guy-hero. Maybe another interesting character might be the seductive vampiress-turned-good. All-in-all, this book reads rather like a computer game. Entertaining enough, but not epic material. I guess I might be too picky with a one-volume book, but I still can't help being disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book unless you need bird cage liner, August 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Ruby Flames: Shattered Light#1 (Paperback)
This book was little more than a long advertisement for the computer game of the same name. I have seen some pretty lame advertising techniques for computers games, but this is one of the lowest. It appears that the only reason for this book was to lend credibility to the computer game.

Have you ever seen a movie and wondered if the only reason they made it was to sell the action figures, the toys, and other associated merchandise? That is the feeling you get from this book.

The story is one cliche after another. Worse than that, these cliches have been done better in fan-fiction you can find on the web. It feels like the story was very rushed and it is about as deep as a bird bath. I bought the book because I had seen it on display at a gaming convention, and that was a terrible mistake. The authors should take the time to research how people fought with the types of weapons his characters use in the books. To anyone that knows anything about those types of weapons, the fight scenes were an absolute mockery of reality. Considering how many people are knowledgeable on this subject these days, I don't see why authors don't at least take the time to read up on the subject and maybe talk to a few people who know about that type of combat. This lack of research was just another example of the "rushed" feel to the book. One can only guess it was pushed to print just to give the computer game a little PR.
