3.0 out of 5 stars genius wandering in the land of (con)fusion
Gato plays wonderfully on this cd, but the fusion style arrangements are frustrating. His earlier works are so much more satisfying. "El Pampero" and the double cd "Bolivia and Under Fire" are good examples of his real genius.

Gato Barbieri's "Ruby, Ruby" is a delightful blast from this exquisite saxophonist from Argentina. Barbieri became a star with his soundtrack for "The Last Tango In Paris," the film with Marlon Brando. This set from 1977 starts out with "Ruby" that Ray Charles recorded. Its delightful melody becomes a Latin charmer. The mood expands on Barbieri's lovely "Nostalgia" with loose party voices woven into the mix. Marvin Gaye penned "Latin Reaction," yet this is the only version of the melody I could find. Ian Underwood's synthesizer underpins this gorgeously romantic melody. From Marvin Gaye, Barbieri moves to a tune penned by Stevie Wonder, "Ngiculela--Es Una Historia--I Am Singing" with Paulinho da Costa's percolating percussion giving the track great energy. Barbieri's "Blue Angel" is another churning meld with Gato's signature passionate build. Herb Alpert's production is excellent on the disc that ends with Barbieri's performance of Alpert's "Midnight Tango." "Ruby, Ruby" is an excellent jazz set with Barbieri's distinct lush romantic feel. Enjoy!

I bought this as an LP in the '70s and was immediately hooked on "El Gato"'s music. It's smooth yet hot. Totally distinctive with almost a classic Tito Puente like rhythmic touch. This will take you to another place where palm trees gently sway to a tropical breeze.
