Format: Hardcover
Ruby Gloom's Keys to Happiness is a gem of a book. Measuring about 7x6 inches and containing 48 pages, it's part cute gothic art book part children's book. Having been unable to find much information about it online prior to purchasing my copy (on eBay), I was pleasantly surprised to discover what a quality item it is. It features black flocking (think soft fuzz) on the front and back cover, and the pages inside are all made of thick, glossy, fully inked paper. The binding is stitched, rather than glued, for extra durability.

Rather than telling a story, the book consists of a series of vignettes. Each full-page image of official Ruby Gloom art work is paired with a quote/quasi piece of advice on the opposite page. For example, the words "Two heads are better than one...especially when they're both on the same body." is paired with a picture of Ruby sewing additional heads onto the bodies of her stuffed animals. The art is gorgeous, but while the writing is acceptably silly and inoffensive, it's nothing spectacular.

Fans of the Ruby Gloom cartoon will find some aspects slightly out of character (for instance, book Ruby claims to avoid Misery as much as possible), and while most of the familiar faces are here in some form, Frank, Len, and Iris don't appear at all.

All in all, I love this book, and I think any Ruby fan would be delighted to add it to their collection (for a reasonable price!), and children (especially those with spooky leanings) should enjoy the adorable full-color artwork and the quirky platitudes.
