How to Start a Fire
Anna, Kate and Georgiana have been bosom buddies since their salad days at University of California at Santa Cruz: This novel follows the three adventurous women into middle age. Read about the author, Lisa Lutz

Book Description

When Sadie Brennan, a Maine antiques dealer, is called to her sister’s estate outside Chicago, she has no idea she’s being pulled into a web of mystery. She is there to help her eight-year-old niece, Savannah, who has entered a trauma-induced state of muteness. But once she arrives in town, Sadie finds herself continually crossing paths with an intriguing bag lady named Ruby, and her life truly becomes a deepening odyssey filled with inexplicable events that verge on miracles and challenge her rationale. Drawn by an irresistible force, Sadie and Savannah are compelled to solve the puzzling enigma of the mysterious homeless woman. The growing collection of clues they gather from a museum, a colorful multi-cultural marketplace, a cathedral, the Chicago slums, and even a cemetery, coalesce into an awe-inspiring revelation of Ruby’s shining identity.
In this magical novel, Mary Summer Rain keeps her readers on the edge of their seats while leading them through a merry, page-turning adventure led by an old woman whose identity and purpose are initially unclear but who eventually proves to be someone far greater than anyone could ever imagine.
Whether Ruby is believed to be an eccentric old woman, an angel, a crazy lady, or someone far greater than these, she will most definitely stretch one’s idea of possibilities and carry the reader into a realm of thought extending far beyond the confines of the proverbial box.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!!! April 26, 2005
There are many jewels to be found in the novel, "Ruby".

Ruby, who is the female aspect of God, helps the characters resolve their relationship issues by helping them see the root causes of their problems. It is filled with insight and wisdom.

I loved the characters. The story takes you away and it is as if you are right there watching all the events unfold.

The ending gave me chills...truth bumps.

Absolutely Brilliant. Excellent.

I recommend ALL books by Mary Summer Rain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome Return June 11, 2005
By Roderic
This book, while disarmingly simple in it's premise and style, contains a compassion and grace, that is genuine. It is a welcome return for those of us who have come to be used to the prolific offerings of Mary Summer Rain, only to have her suddenly take a sabbatical. It was an exciting prospect for her to return with a novel, only her second, and I was far from dissappointed. She simultaneously perceives life through the innocent eyes of a child, and the learned eyes of a sage, and the confluence of that sight transmits so nicely into this story of a deeply personal spiritual nature. It is well written, with great thought, and is imbued with integrity and charm from its beginning to its conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary does it again... May 12, 2005
I found "Ruby" to be a wonderful tale of discovery, adventure and healing. It is like a mixture of "DaVinci Code", "Joan of Arcadia", and No-Eyes all rolled into one.

She has a wonderful way of touching you on a soul level and stirring up questions in yourself. As always she has a special talent for describing scenes and surroundings perfectly. This novel is no exception. I hope that those who read it will have an open mind and take a look at life events in a new way. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Huge piece of the puzzle April 25, 2005
From the moment the story begins, the reader is held in Mary's tightly woven web of drama, intrigue and spiritual insights. Her use of descriptive writing paints vivid and realistic images of scenery utilizing all the senses. From the quaint, picturesque town in Maine to the busy bustle of Chicago, images come alive with emotion and depth. The reader is pulled into the lives of the characters as the story's mystery unfolds.

In Mary's usual fashion, she carries the reader into the lives of characters who mirror to us our own inner questions and feelings as they journey in their search for truth. Sometimes the truth is right under our nose - or found while sitting on a park bench. Sometimes the truth lies in a child's laughter- or in the back alley-way. Mary's characters touch the hearts of all, and reflect the passion and love within all of us.

Within this book, there is never a dull moment and never a moment where hope is not found.

"Ruby" will touch your heart and soul and open your eyes to an even greater depth of spiritual knowingness. Second best to reading this book would be to see it played out in a movie!

This book is filled with humor, spiritual insights, compassion and truth. I have read all of Mary's books, and this one is, without a doubt, the best one yet! Thank you Mary for giving us one more piece of the puzzle of life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ruby will bring you a new enlightenment April 26, 2005
It was a joy to read and once I started I couldn't put it down. I was amazed as to how fast I was grabbing for the next page. No matter what stage the character Sadie was in her adventure the reader is always wondering what will come next. I laughed and cried with her.

Mary Summer Rain has again produced a story that will entertain, enlighten and uplift many readers from all stages of age and interests. She was able to impart many of her lessons of spirituality that she has written about over the years in a way that entertains the reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good If You're New to Mary's Writing April 9, 2006
I've been reading MSR's books from almost the beginning, so when I learned she was switching from non-fiction writing to fiction, I was excited at the prospect, because I had read The Seventh Mesa and thought it was outstanding.

Suffice it to say, my expectations were high because I do have a long history, and I've often read many of the other sources that MSR discusses in her Q&A books and autobiographies.

I felt Ruby was written for the initiate not for someone seeking a peek into the inner mysteries. MSR has hinted a lot in her non-fictional writings about all that she knows. I was hoping she'd fill us in.

Ruby is written in a highly descriptive style, one that I admire and appreciate. I felt like I was there with the characters watching the scenes as if I were watching a movie. The simply message of the book is one that can never be told enough, never gets old. So even though I was wanting something more, slightly different, I've recommended this book to many people with the hopes that it will pique their curiosity to explore the non-fictional offerings MSR has written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poignant tale of love, relationships, and spirit April 25, 2005
I found this novel by Mary Summer Rain to be in congruence with the flavor of her other books that extrapolate the truth of who we truly are. The story line is an easy read, with poignant emotion and a beautiful parable to behold the mystery in sync with an inter-related spirit to human connection of our lives. I feel anyone reading will find a reflection of themselves. For anyone on a spiritual journey, an intrinsic design unfolds the mystery of just how powerfully magic love masterfully exposes miracles.
