Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Large, well-spaced text with lots of repetition works well with the endearing illustrations of woodland animals. Ruby, a raccoon, is all set to paint a picture of a tree, but her friends come along one by one and want to be included in the painting. She is very accommodating. When she puts her paintbrush down, her friends all feel that important defining aspects of themselves are missing, but Ruby insures them that their "best parts" are in her masterpiece-their smiles. Animals in pinafores and overalls are often used in children's books, but, in this case, the ink-and-watercolor illustrations are fresh, stimulating, and full of charm. The story includes common sight words and complete sentences, and new vocabulary is simple enough for sounding out. Although the theme is not unusual, the ending is very satisfying.-Corrina Austin, Locke's Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada

From Booklist

PreS-K. In Ruby Bakes a Cake (2004), the little raccoon asks her animal friends for advice. This time she is painting a picture of a tree, and her friends--Fiona Fox, Bunny Rabbit, and Dan Duck--come by and ask her to include them in the picture. Each one in turn is dissatisfied with her portrait; they all say she left out their very best parts. Ruby begs to differ. She shows them that she did paint the best in them--their smiling faces all together. Moore's expressive pictures show characters that are both animal and human as they scowl and smile in the woodland setting. The friendship fun in this I Can Read! book is just right for beginning readers. Hazel Rochman

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute story; warm feelings toward God, December 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The story is cute. Note that I didn't realize that it was very geared toward recognizing God (Ruby thinks that the tree is "a gift from God, so she paints it" -- that refrain is used several times in the short book). This is neither good nor bad! Just wanted to share that as it may either entice or dissuade people from the book. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars We Love Ruby!, July 26, 2010
Our favorite Ruby book is probably Ruby Paints a Picture. Ruby loves to paint pictures of God's gifts, and begins painting a tree. One by one, her friends come along and request that she paint them. Ruby is happy to paint them because they are each a gift from God. When they see the painting, they are each disappointed that Ruby did not paint their best feature (webbed feet, long ears, wide wings and red tail). At the end of the book, Ruby explains that she painted four very special gifts from God. Her friends quickly change their minds and say that Ruby did paint the very best part of them-their smiles!
