Book Description

July 20, 2010 9 and up
Ruby Lee has never downloaded an iTune, heard of Facebook, nor seen a video on YouTube. Raised in rural Kansas with her mom as her best friend, she’s cozy and content. But everything changes when she and her mom move to Florida to care for her grandmother, Nana Dottie. Ruby quickly realizes she’s definitely not in Kansas anymore—the kids in her huge school are totally different…but her new life is not so bad. What is bad is the fifteen-year-feud between Ruby’s mother and grandmother that shows no signs of ending. Will Ruby have to choose between her mom and her new life, which isn’t looking so awful after all?

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This cheery novel's references to the classic movie The Wizard of Oz start with the title and end with the last scene, in which seventh-grader Ruby watches her favorite film on a drive-in screen with all of her favorite people. Rayburn opens the story by uprooting her heroine from a fun but gadget-free existence in rural Kansas. Although narrator Ruby points out all of the parallels between her life and Dorothy Gale's, Rayburn doesn't force too much of the movie's plot onto her own story. Ruby moves to Florida with her mother and adapts to their new life with Ruby's grandmother; Ruby's new middle school seems less like Oz than it does a (very well financed) public middle school, complete with mean girls and an American Idol–like contest. The happy ending not only brings all three generations together and finds Mom a great new career and boyfriend, but Ruby, too, finds true love and her own talent. Over the rainbow, yes, and a little bit over the top. Grades 4-7. --Abby Nolan

More About the Author

Tricia Rayburn used to save her weekly allowance for two things: the Scholastic Book Club and her family's bi-annual trip to the Smithaven Mall, where she loaded up on the latest Baby-Sitter's Club and Sweet Valley Twins books. Years later, Tricia discovered her love of writing for tweens and teens while taking a children's literature course in graduate school. Her first novel, The Melting of Maggie Bean, started as an assignment in that course, turned into her thesis, and was eventually published by Simon & Schuster as one of six launch titles for M!X, a line for tweens. Maggie Bean Stays Afloat and Maggie Bean in Love followed, and were joined by Ruby's Slippers and Siren in July 2010. Tricia lives on eastern Long Island. 5.0 out of 5 stars the BEST book of the year!, January 18, 2012
This review is from: Ruby's Slippers (Kindle Edition)
If you like fiction books that have alot of adventure and fun, the you have to read Rubby's Slippers! I'm 11years old and this is one of the best books I have ever read. This book is great for all ages and teaches you about friendship, family, school drama, mean but popular girls who you don't like and are mean to you but you are forced to work with them, the Wizard of Oz, and to be who you are and nobody else. I really hope you like this book because I know that this book could be anyones favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! Absorbing Story., February 21, 2011
This review is from: Ruby's Slippers (Kindle Edition)
If you've never read this book and are looking for a fun book this is the one to read! I am twelve years old and have read this book um, about 4 times! I like this book `cause it talks about being 'different', meaning the main character Ruby, doesn't know what Facebook or YouTube are, and has never down-loaded an iTune. Here is a summary of the book: Ruby Lee is a girl who was born and raised in rural Kansas. In her free time she hangs out with her best friend- her mom. Then everything changes when her mother moves the family to Florida to care for Rubys gandma. Ruby is suprised at how different things are... not to mention making an enemy on the first day of seventh grade. Ruby now has to cope with enemy's, healthy eating, and fancy schools. She really hopes that she can make everything right. So, I won't spoil the end of the story but I will tell you that Ruby learns that changes aren't so bad, and the people you don't think are great really are! Hope you guys read this book cuz I can't stop!
