A GUTBUCKET JUBILEE!,

This review is from: Ruckus Juice & Chitlins 1 (Audio CD)
If you're an aficianado of the skiffle band or kitchen band and have a hankering for the blues, this offering is for you. This CD has 23 selections featuring the most popular jug bands of the 1920's and 1930's. The MEMPHIS JUG BAND, CANNON JUG STOMPERS, and WHISTLER'S JUG BAND (featuring the incredible 13 year old Rudolph Thompson blowing the daylights out of the jug) are the standouts here. BEN FERGUSON's doleful ballads of PLEASE DON'T HOLLER, MAMA and TRY AND TREAT HER RIGHT are great as well as Cannon's MINGLEWOOD BLUES, the Memphis Jug Band's SPIDER NEST BLUESand Whistler's LOW DOWN BLUES. There are some sophisticated groups like the DIXIELAND JUG BLOWERS but most of these groups are making music with whatever they could lay their hands on and great music they do make! Jug playing is a diminishing art form but this CD is a master class as to how it's done!
