Editorial Reviews

Review

Deftly translated into English by Philip E. Devenish ... Rudolf Bultmann: A Biography is a strongly recommended contribution to academic library collections. --Midwest Book Review, October 2013

Rudolf Bultmann ... is widely regarded as one of the three or four Protestant theologians of the twentieth century whose impact on Christian witness and theology promises to be lasting. The value of Konrad Hammann's fine biography is the extent to which it illumines the life and work of this extraordinary human being. --Schubert M. Ogden, University Distinguished Professor of Theology Emeritus at Southern Methodist University

In this outstanding book one encounters not only the history of a problem, namely the compatibility of historical enlightenment and religious beliefs, but also the story of a personality. The biography of Konrad Hammann is thus a prime example of a successful history of ideas. --Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

A thorough overview of Bultmann's life and thought, with interesting insights into his personal life and detailed summaries of his major books and essays. Most helpfully refutes any accusation that Bultmann was at all anti-Semitic, highlighting his deep involvement in the Confessing Church and deep sympathy for his Jewish contemporaries.

Might have benefited from a retrospective assessment of his significance for theology today, but perhaps that is asking too much of a straightforward biography.

The late Rudolf Bultmann was the most influential New Testament scholar of the twentieth century. This biography will remain a standard for decades to come, the product of careful and insightful scholarly research. The author, Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology at the University of Muenster, traces Bultmann's theological development and contributions along with the course of his academic career in most readable fashion and writes accessibly also to the general reader. The book shows that Bultmann understood himself to be a theologian of the church, one whose voice proved to be prophetic in the midst of the struggles of the church during the Third Reich. His students themselves became major voices in academic and church circles. This book is must reading for those interested in the undergirdings of present-day theological study. Interesting photos are also included.

Amazingly, there has been no solid biography of Rudolf Bultmann (1884-1976) ever written. He was no doubt the most influential theological and New Testament figure of the 20th Century. This is a wonderful biography, written by a German scholar who has had a long and deep involvement in Bultmann's theological and exegetical tradition. It shows beautifully the various influences that led to Bultmann's theological and exegetical positions, and his courageous pursuit of them across his whole career. There are also fine touches that describe his family and social life and an excellent chapter on Bultmann's life as a leader of the Confessing Church during the Nazi era. Over the years there have been some fine books on the thought of Rudolf Bultmann and its contribution, not only to the study of the New Testament, but also to Theology and Hermeneutics (especially by Walter Schmitals, Andre Malet and John Painter), but none of them set his thought within his life-story. This outstanding book does both.

I began Konrad Hammann's Rudolf Bultmann: A Biography in late 2013 and finished yesterday. It has been a book that I've been reading on the side in my spare time. I must say that it is a fantastic and thorough book. It covers so much information ranging from stories about Bultmann's family to his academic works to controversies caused by his ideas to debates with colleagues and students and everything in-between. For anyone interested in this book let me recommend it. It is readable, but not superficial, and well worth your time—even if you take as much time as I did to read it!
