I'm rating this as a 5 star product; for my needs it rates only at 4 stars but I'm not going to diminish it's value because it wasn't tailored to my specific needs, however if purchased for the intended hiking/mountain climbing then I wouldn't want any another product securing my dog!

I purchased the Ruffwear DoubleBack Harness, as many others have, for my 90lb mobility challenged 10 year old Labrador. Recently diagnosed with diabetes and an E Coli infection, his back legs were almost completely useless for about two weeks. We had been using a sheet as a homemade sling to help him stand up & make his way to the backyard. By the time I found this harness he was starting to get up on his own, but still needs help now and then. This is without question a spectacular product, great in design and concept, and very well built; however, for obvious reasons due to it's intended purpose, it is NOT meant as an easy-on, easy-off product. Other reviews have mentioned that it needs to have quick release buckles, which I completely agree with, and would love to see Ruffwear create a line specific to mobility challenged dogs, but for now I'll take it to my tailor and see if they can modify it to replace the metal buckles with the quick release kind for easier use at home. As it is, Buster now gets insulin shots twice a day and we rotate where we inject them; my mom finds the loose skin behind & between his shoulder blades to be the easiest for her to grasp but with the harness on it's more of a challenge to get that loose skin to relax & give way.

Absolutely terrific design and execution of this harness. I know it is supposed to be for lifting but I got it because I have a houdini dog. She even got out of the Web Master...a feat seldom done by a 4 legger. I really like the way the double back is fully adjustable on the hook ups. Yes it does mean it takes a bit longer to put on but I like knowing my girl is really in!. With the optional rear leg loops (stored in the little roll up on the back of the harness), there is no way at all for her to escape. I cannot rate this harness for the lifting properties under extreme outdoor conditions (cross country work and mountain travel) because that is not our lifestyle. I can say that it is PERFECT for my houdini. The way I can secure it on her does help with her anxiety and the adjustments and rear loops make it impossible for her to shrug out of it in a panic. This is not a harness for tying the dog out. It is one meant for human /dog exercise. We love it.

My wife and I have spent a fair amount of money on specialty motorcycle pet carriers (my wife and I each have our own Harley, my daughter has two motorcycles, and we have five dogs that all love to ride along.) We spent extra money adding security measures to carrier mounting and enhancements to standard dog harnesses. I ordered one of these Ruffwear DoubleBack harnesses for the newest addition to our riding pack - a Manchester Terrier who is too large to ride in a fully enclosed carrier - and after receiving it promptly ordered another for our Rat Terrier. Our other riders are too small for the smallest Ruffwear DoubleBack harness and will continue to ride in screened-in carriers lashed in with standard harnesses. The quality of this product is superb and it fulfills its purpose absolutely. I went from satisfied that our riders were safe to feeling guaranteed as such. The fitment chart for the extra small is accurate with a range of 17-24 inches girth; it fits securely and comfortably on both our female Rat Terrier, Rosie, with a girth of 17-1/2", and our Manchester, Teeka G., with a 20" girth. I've seen some reviewers complain that this harness does not have quick-connects for rapid donning, but quick-connects would not achieve the intended high security standards maintained by the double-back webbing loops. This is a canyoneering/mountaineering/rock climbing dog harness and is perfectly suited to those activities and motorcycle riding.

I bought this harness in XS for my adult serval cat. It is extremely secure. He cannot escape this harness. It has great adjustable straps to get a snug, but comfortable fit. I recommend this product 100%. The quality of this product is worth every penny.

I don't actually do any rock climbing, although some in my family do. I purchased this to try as a car-harness. I have searched for a good car harness, and I have purchased and tried two different dog car-harnesses. The one that gets the best crash rating is constructed and attached in such a way that the dog really should just SIT up straight the whole time. But my dog would lie down in it and this put her in an unsafe position. The Doubleback just looked to me like a possible solution. And it is! With my Aussie in the middle of the back seat, I run the middle car lap/shoulder belt through the red strap on top that says "ATTACH". She can then sit or lie down comfortably and has the safety strength of this harness and the car belt. Because the belly part is so long and wide, it distributes the force over a large area. At first I thought it was tedious to do the two straps, but now it is really quick. My dog has become very accustomed to having the harness put on. When I'm making short trips around town I leave the rear leg straps in their pocket, but I use them for longer trips. I know this is not sold as a dog car-harness, but it is so much better than anything else out there. Size SMALL was the correct size for my 43 pound Australian Shepherd. The sizing instructions are correct.
