This is an awesome pack for anyone who loves to hike with their dog! I have researched and bought different packs over the last couple of years and this is by far the best and worth the money! One feature I really like that I have not found on other packs is that the packs/saddlebags DETACH from the harness. This makes it super easy to put on and take off when the pup's pack is loaded up. The harness is also nice enough to be used on its own. I also like the harness design, other packs with harnesses are not as well designed. I do not use the water bladders, but they are a nice feature if you want that extra. I hike quite a bit with my 116 lb Greater Swiss Mountain Dog and she loves her pack. The design also positions the pack appropriately just behind the dog's shoulders where it should go.

Ok, I just got this pack today and as such, I have not put it through a trial. From first impressions, I'll start it at 5 stars and update over time, if needed. I can't add much to what the other reviewers said but I will reiterate that the bag is made with excellent quality. The water bladders seem fragile (made of thin, hard plastic) but my decision to purchase this bag was made before I even knew it came with them.

What I wanted to add was regarding the sizing. I will post some pics but the pack does run on the "large" side. That is, if you have a medium-sized dog, you will likely need the small size. I have a 2 year-old male Border Collie who runs a bit on the small side (about 40 lbs). His girth (chest measurement at the widest part, just below the front legs) came in at about 25"-26". I first tried the medium-sized pack because, well, he's a medium-sized dog (and I hadn't yet measured his chest) but it turned out to be too big. According to the sizing information, the medium sized pack is designed for dogs with a 27"+ chest girth. I would guess you could go up to 29" or 30" with a small size. The Ruffwear website recommends that if you are "borderline" (on any of the sizes), go with the smaller pack. Seriously, 27" would be the absolute minimum requirement for the medium sized pack and you will likely have it at the absolute minimum strap-lengths. With the small, there is PLENTY of adjustment upwards but with the medium, you're stuck.. So, if your dog is any less than 28 or 29 inches of chest girth, go for the small.

I've already got the Webmaster harness for my Tripawd great dane. I got this for my puppy great dane, 1yr 4months 140 lbs.
It's exactly as described by the description. It's basically a Webmaster harness with additional clips on top that allows the Pack to be clipped in at 4 points, and 2 smaller clips/loops to go around one of the straps near the front on both sides for stabilization. We filled up the 2 platypus type water packs and added 4 more water bottles, and he didn't even noticed he had this pack on. And once properly fitted, it sits over the shoulders as it should for better weight distribution for the dog.

Avoid packs that sit on the middle of their back where it curves back down. That can cause extra back strain and can lead to injury.

We've had this dog pack for several years, and it does stand up well to heavy use. We pack water bottles in the pack to give our 160 pound, 3-1/2 year old Great Dane a "job" on his walks. In other words, to help him burn energy. He wears the pack with no problems and the size extra large easily fits his humongous chest (we measure his chest at 41.5 inches just behind his front legs). The problem is the padding on the pack straps does not stay in place well and regular use of the backpack leads to serious chaffing of our dog under his front legs (in the "armpit" area). Keep in mind we do have about 8 pounds of water in the backpack - but that is not a huge weight to carry for a 160 pound dog.

After doing a lot of research trying to find the best pack for my dog, everything pointed to Ruffwear as being great packs. After a month of teetering back in forth whether I wanted to spend the $100 on a pack and get serious about hiking with my dog, I just decided to go for it. I use the harness daily on walks and runs with my German Shepherd. I had a little trouble getting the perfect fit because all the straps adjusted. After a little trial and error I found a fit that seems comfortable with my dog while providing good support for the pack when we use it. All of the stitching on the harness and pack is reinforced and is made to last.

The pack it's self is very spacious with more than enough room to take him out on a 4 day backpacking trip without having to stop or carry his load. There is also a reinforced strap on the outside of the pack that you can use to mount things. All in all I am very pleased with the quality of the pack and will definitely recommend this to anyone who is serious about backpacking, hiking or camping with your dog. The large size of the pack would be more suited for backpacking and Ruffwear has smaller ones for day hikes and the like.

This is a great little pack! The material is light but durable enough to withstand wear and tear we put on it (rubbing against fences and signs with nuts and bolts in them, as well as occasionally getting stuck in a doorway because he's wider than he's used to. My great pyr loves his pack and dances when I pull it out for our walks. Haven't had any off road experience with it yet, as we're both building up our endurance. Starting out with a full Nalgene water bottle (32oz) in each main pocket displays plenty of room to spare for food and treats and much more, and my big guy shows no discomfort at all. This is a great product and if it ever wears out I'll most definitely be buying another.
