UPDATE: June, 2014. Just cleaned my living room carpet last night. I have pets. I was amazed at how much better the Rug Doctor works than the upright Hoover Steamvac, or the Bissell Spot-Bot. Don't get me wrong, I love grabbing the Spot-Bot for quick clean up, but if you want deeper cleaning, call the Doctor. I emptied the reservoir and it was amazing how much dirt and grime came out from one pass on the carpets. They looked quite a bit brightened up. If you have a lot of pets, kids, or light carpets, this is a great item to own and will make it easier to keep the carpets fresh between professional cleanings.

So, will owning the "Doctor" make it less expensive and more convenient to clean your carpets? If you have pets, high traffic, dirty feet, kids who spill and perhaps those beige carpets that seem to be the norm today, you may be hiring a service to deep-clean now and then, renting something like this unit from your grocery store, or else you have an upright "steam" cleaner such as a Hoover Steamvac. Since it's a pain to lug home a rug cleaner, and since carpet cleaning services are not inexpensive, the Rug Doctor makes a case for owning a "pro" unit yourself and recouping the cost, probably on the second or third use (even the first, if you have many rooms to clean.)

So, how does the Rug Doctor work, and is it worth it compared to uprights or continuing to hire someone? Here are the pros and cons.

First off: what comes with this unit:

The Mighty Pro X3 machine itself
fold-down handle adjustable from 32.5" to 35.5"
An Upholstery/stair tool with a long hose (12' hose)
40-oz. bottle of Pet Formula Carpet Cleaner
17-oz.

A good carpet cleaner is essential in my world. I have pets and if there is a cup of coffee around, someone inevitably spills it in my house. I've had a couple of cleaners, including a Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge, F5914-900 and a BISSELL ProHeat 2X Upright Deep Carpet Cleaner, 9200. I found the RugDoctor to be a middle-of-the road cleaner. While there are positive characteristics to this machine, I would recommend reading many positive and negative reviews and also renting a RugDoctor from a store like Big Lots before investing in this machine. If you don't have a Big Lots near you, go to the Rug Doctor website where you can locate rental locations (others include Dollar General,U-Haul). At the end of the day, I prefer my Hoover SteamVac Carpet Cleaner with Clean Surge, F5914-900 over this one.

Pros:

READY OUT OF BOX: This product is pretty much ready right out of the box. The only thing the user has to do is fill the lower tank with water and solution and adjust the handle using a side lever that is found on the handle.

TANK CAPACITY: Both the Hoover and the Bissell ProHeat 2x hold a gallon. The RugDoctor's solution tank holds three times as much water. The recovery/dirty water tank holds 3.9 gallons. This allows you to process more rooms without running to the sink. However, this can also be a con. See below under "Emptying the Tank".

In all honesty a Rug Doctor isn't for everyone, but if you are looking for ...

1. A commercial quality heavy duty carpet cleaner.
2. A Good Warranty (5 Year + an Additional 3 Years($20) = 8 Years).
3. High Quality, Standard Replaceable Parts.
4. In Home Maintenance.
5. Something that will really get your carpets and upholstery clean.
6. A Machine that will last you a lifetime if properly taken care of.

And ...

1. Your not afraid of hard work.
2. You don't mind Pushing/Pulling/Lifting a 39+ Pound machine.
3. You will read and follow the 1 page of instructions.
Note: The majority of the negatives listed by some of they other reviewers, came down to the fact they couldn't deal with 1 & 2 and didn't
read or follow the instructions.

Then a Rug Doctor might be what your looking for.

I love this machine. I always owned a Hoover Steamvac and was always impressed with it. However, after using the Rug Doctor, the Steamvac is not even in the same league. I own a 80 lb Lab mix and he always tracks dirt in the house. I also have beige carpets. I used the Steamvac to clean the carpets, but some stubborn stains still persist. With the Rug Doctor, the stains look less noticeable. It also leaves the carpet drier as well. It does a wonderful job of scrubbing the carpet and sucking up the dirty water. I didn't think my rug was still so dirty but the water it picked up was filthy.

It's a great machine but it might be a bit big and heavy for most people. I am 220 lbs and even my arms were getting tired dragging this with a full tank of solution around my house. You can only pull backwards on the machine and you have to tilt it to move it forward. It's like mowing the lawn backwards. It seems like if there is a heavy stain, it would be a good idea to go back and forth over the stain. HOWEVER, the manual states you should NOT go over the area more than 2x. The reason is you don't want too much water to get soaked into the rug. If you have a heavy stain, go over it about twice, and then wait till it dries and then retry. You could also use a pre-treater first.

The solution that comes with the cleaner smells fantastic. I'm definelty going to have to get more.

If you don't clean your carpets routinely, nothing will remove the stains out. However, for routine maintenance like every 3 months, this machine is perfect. I still think the Steamvac is fantastic, but for entire house carpet cleaning, I would prefer using the Rug Doctor. It's more powerful and seems to have a larger tank. I HIGHLY recommend it.
