Only marginally helpful to those new to Rugby,

This review is from: Rugby (Know the Sport) (Paperback)
This book has a number of major flaws that make itexceptionally difficult to understand by those new to Rugby. The diagram of the field is extremely poor; although nominally designed to illustrate the height and width of the field and the position of the major lines, the picture is so poorly labelled that it is nearly impossible to figure out which numbers correspond to which dimensions. A similar problem relates to the total lack of captions for the included photos. Although it is occasionally possible to divine some rationale for the inclusion of a particular photo, a simple caption would have gone a long way in improving their pedagogical value. In some cases important details of the game are woefully undercovered. It is almost impossible to figure out how a scrum plays out based on this book, and the section on rucks and mauls is pretty much useless. Like many poorly designed books, it suffers from a tendency to use terminology before defining it. In particular, nowhere does it ever define the phrase "in touch," despite the fact that it uses this phrase early and often. Overall, although superficially attractive, those new to Rugby should look elsewhere for an introductory text.

This book is a good way to know the basics about rugby union. I think it is a good gift to a rugby player friend or a kid interested in this wonderful sport. As a rugby player I give 4 stars.

Great explanation of the game of rugby in very simple and easy to understand terms. For someone interested in learning the game, whether to play or watch, a book can't get much simpler and to the point.
