Product Description

Special design actually contours the rear taillight of your 2007-08 Wrangler. Custom fit to install directly into factory mounting points for ease of installation and secure attachments. Rubber inserts around the mounting screws keep the metal euro guard off the taillight, prevents scratching and rattles.

Virtually every aspect of the Jeep Wrangler can be customized in some way. Sometimes with customizations, your desire for the new stuff exceeds your willingness and ability to install said equipment. The Rugged Ridge Tail Light Guards came with all the right instructions and material to install quickly and easily. It probably took me longer to locate a screwdriver than it took me to do the installation. Unlike many of the other reviewers, I found all of the right screws were included and ready to go.

Although there are many different tail light guards available for the Wrangler, I happen to think that the Rugged Ridge are among the most handsome. And because they are easy to install, you get almost instant gratification. If you own a 2007-2013 Wrangler, you owe it to yourself to order up set of these tail light guards. Enjoy!!

---Update to the original review - After just over a year, I'm noticing that one taillight guard is actually rusting and the other one has really rusty screws....very disappointing to see that happen after being in place for 14 months. I've ammended my review and lowered it to 1 star - there's no reason these units should be rusty after just 14 months on my Wrangler. Do yourself a favor and skip spending the $$ on these....

I recently purchased/installed these tail light guards on my Jeep Wrangler JK.
Aside from being incredibly simple to install (replace factory screws with included longer screws), they look very nice and are crafted from a pretty tough metal.
We all know that these guys aren't really going to protect your tail light, aside from maybe a stick or two.
I mean face it, if you have backed into a wall/huge tree/boulder enough to hit your tail lamps, you probably aren't going to explain, "Oh no! My tail lights!"
You will likely be concerning yourself with your now mangled rear-door and wheel mount, or the fact that you just crunched your corner panels.
What it does do though is make the tail light assemblies much more rugged looking, and they nicely trim the rear of the Jeep.
The factory tail lamps are a bit plain compared to the rest of the vehicle, this is a perfect (and relatively cheap) way to remedy that...

There are a few reviews that claim these tail light guards are not for protection, and that anyone using them for such is basically kidding themselves. Well, I guess these guards wouldn't protect you that much from solid rock. They sure seem like they would take a decent hit from branches, and that's the kind of stuff I'm going to hit at that height. If I don't see a rock that high up, my Jeep is going to have far bigger problems than cracked plastic. Maybe that's just the trails I ride on, which are rocky but also wooded. If you're such a hardcore crawler where you're surrounded tightly by rock on all sides, I'm guessing you could afford to put corner covers on the rear tub and switch to flush LED lights anyway.

The guards do look great. Black powder-coated (or bedlined?) metal, which are offset a bit from the tail light with four plastic spacers. Four longer replacement screws per light hold it all in. I've heard of an older, or maybe a competitor's, version of this product in which only four longer screws were provided for the "outboard" positions (making you re-use four original screws), but that was not the case for me- they sent eight long screws and you just have to make sure to use the larger ones on the outside. The instructions were clear, and they suggested to not to let the tail light assembly move when you remove the original screws. If it does move (as it did for me), just shift it around and you'll see how it seals best against the body and lets the screw holes align. Installation took 20 minutes, because it was 105 degrees and I needed to go inside to get a cold beer. Amateur move.

I think these tail light guards match the look and use of my Jeep, and offer me better protection from branches than what came from the factory. One day I'll win the lottery, put Dana 60's and 40 inch tires on it, and I'll need something that can handle hitting a four foot boulder. For now, I am happy.

I bought these guards because I like the way they look on my Jeep. I have a hard time believing any claims that they actually protect the lights against anything. Well, maybe if you were backing up into some sort of spear and managed to be lucky enough to hit one of the horizontal bars instead of the plastic lens... in that case, okay. But aside from that very specific situation, I don't see them helping much. Here's why I feel that way:

They mount to the lights by replacing the four screws on the light face with four slightly longer screws. You have basically attached a hard metal object onto a more fragile surface (the plastic lens) for protection. I think of it like gluing a quarter onto a piece of glass: Hit the naked glass with a hammer, the glass will break. Glue a quarter onto the glass and hit the quarter with a hammer, the glass will still break. Of course, this is not to say that I'd rather have a set that attached directly to the Jeep's body -- then you'd just be transferring all of that energy to the body, and I'd rather replace a light than an entire painted panel.

Like I said though, I didn't buy them for their functionality. In my opinion, they look better than the Mopar Guards and the Body Armor Guards, and they're cheaper than both. I also think they look better than the Rampage Guards. They have a heavy-duty feel to them, and once attached they look like they're supposed to be there, matching the other black components nicely.
