I installed this yesterday on my 2006 Jeep Wrangler, so I can't yet speak to the pulling power. But, the build quality is excellent, and I really like the fact that you can install the solenoid box over the motor (off to the side), or directly over the cable drum in the center. The handheld remote cable locks into the solenoid box, which I like (though this isn't explained in the instructions). Excellent price through Amazon. The only mistake I made: I thought I'd do all the wiring connections after I had the winch installed on my vehicle, but there's a bolt for the ground wires on the bottom of the motor that's impossible to access once you have the winch bolted in place. I had to remove the winch, and the mounting plate, to complete the wiring. So, hook up the electric cables to the winch motor and solenoid *before* you bolt the winch in place.

The schematic is slightly wrong. I suggest that you bench test this winch, before you install it. To reverse the direction of a DC motor, the "normal" method is to reverse the armature connection. This winch controller reverses the series field. The ground connection for the armature is located on the bottom of the unit. It is imperative that you connect this terminal to a solid ground. If the ground connection comes loose, electrical current will flow through the bearings in the motor and also the gear box bearings. That problem will cause rapid bearing failure. To prevent this problem, I installed an Optima battery. The top terminals, are connected to the Electrical system of my 1988 Ford 4X4. The side terminals on the Optima battery are directly connected to the winch. This I have found to be the most efficient way to ensure that a "solid" ground has been established. The control unit, connector is a little bit cheap. I suggest that you install a heavy duty connector with a waterproof cover. For the price, the winch is worth it. Since my application may be different from yours, I suggest that you "think it out" before you begin the installation. Passing thought. To prevent your winch from "vanishing" from your vehicle, tack weld all of the mounting bolts. That way, if it is stolen, they had to "work at it". Yes, If I had the need, I would buy another Rugged Ridge winch!
I purchased this winch along with the Rugged Ridge XHD Bumper 11540.10. I got my Jeep stuck in about 4 foot of snow and it allowed for me to talk my wife into purchasing these items for future stuck situations. I'm not really an off-road kind of guy but it snows pretty bad in northern Indiana and I'm also planning on getting stuck in some muddy fields when I'm ready to cut wood for the next winter. So talking her into involved about 30 seconds worth of pleading (and a promise to buy her something nice as well).
But I digress.
I started installing the bumper and winch Saturday morning around 8.30am. I'm not a mechanic by any means so it was important that the instructions be pretty detailed. And other than a minor complaint, the instructions very decent. The complaint is for the four bolts that you use to attach the winch to the bumper. It says to use the four included bolts with washers and nuts but it fails to mention that the nuts are placed into slots on the winch. It took me a few minutes to figure that out and it didn't help that the holes in which the bolts pass through were tapped to make it look like the bolts are screwed directly into the winch.
Anyhoo, after taking the factory bumper off and getting everything ready, the install was a breeze. After it was all said and done, it took me just shy of 3 hours to install the bumper and winch combo and it looks pretty snazzy on my Jeep. The only complaint I have is with the control box that you attach somewhere on the winch. You have the option to either attach it to the bars over the line (as pictured) or over the motor on the left-hand side of the winch (brackets come with the winch for both options, so it's a matter of what you want - which is nice).Read more ›

My wife bought this for me as a Christmas present. Took me roughly 20 minutes to install. First of all the instructions were a few french fries short of a happy meal. If you read the directions at all then you will know that you need to connect all the wires from the control box to the motor. Then you have the option of where to place the control box and where to the run the battery wires. Which reminds me, zip ties do help and don't over tighten them so that they cut through the insulation. Now when its time to bolt on the winch to the plate, I noticed that there were no torque specs. After researching various reads and videos, many people have used between 45lbs to 65lbs so I went with 55lbs. After I installed everything, I coated the terminals on the battery and all connections on the winch. When it's time to test the winch and see if it works, you MUST TWIST the plug in till it clicks. I unspooled the cable and and spooled it back while my clevis hook was attached to my wife's Dodge Ram up hill. I have noticed that many people have wondered if this winch can handle water. Yes and No. I noticed there is a paper gasket on my winch and decided to open it and put a little bit of silicone to seal it up. Not to hard but it will help. Hope this helps.
