4.0 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but the best out there so far... July 23, 2012
Size Name:500 GB
Understandable you might be frustrated. But as a Video Professional who has used quite a few of these more recent 7200rpm 500G USB3/FW800 drives, I can state for the record that a simple format before beginning to use these products has taken care of any unwanted software I have encountered. These are the only smaller, portable drives we use here professionally. They stand up to abuse and are much less likely to run hot or blow-out their rear circuitry than other high-speed smaller drives on the market. We were using the G-Technology G-DRIVE mini 500GB 7200RPM Portable External Hard Drive, USB 2.0, Firewire 400, Firewire 800 Interfaces 0G01650 at first. We use their larger counterparts and these mini drives looked so cool as they were a miniature version of their larger, sleek aluminum drives from which they were born. They were 7200rpm drives and were quite fast as well. After plugging a few in (FW800 via MAC Pro) and hearing a little "pop" and in one case seeing a little "poof" of acrid smelling smoke come out of the rear of the unit, we discovered the rear circuitry and just fried itself. I'm sure the little laptop drive sealed so nicely inside was just fine, but, as you might imagine, it was more than enough to make us look elsewhere. Over 50 Lacie Rugged Drives later (all 7200 rpm), we couldn't be more pleased. Because these are hub-powered, only a shorter USB 3.0 cable can be used, a 6ft USB3 cable we purchased would not power up the drive. The FW800 connections always work without incident. If USB3.0 is your main medium, I highly recommend purchasing Lacie's USB 3.0 "Y" cable which has one 3.0 data port and a 2nd USB 2.0 plug just for power. It is my opinion that the extra power supplied via this "y" cable, allows this speedy 7200rpm drive to reach its full potential in read/write speed capability.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great combo mobile drive August 9, 2011
Size Name:500 GB
I have been owning some rugged drives already for the past years and have never been disappointed. I use them at work to exchange large files between PCs and Macs and the Rugged Triple USB3.0 is the best version so far as it is the fastest on Mac with FireWire 800 and fastest on PCs with USB 3.0. It is more than 3 times faster on PC thanks to the SuperSpeed USB 3.0. The product is great and secure with the rubber sleeve and anti shock design.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice drive--terrible software February 25, 2012
Size Name:1 TB|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've used an earlier model LaCie rugged drive and like it quite a bit. Before that, I'd gone through three or four external hard-drives, all of which had serious problems. For example, they drew more power than standard USB ports could deliver, they were fragile or they would inexplicably stop working. LaCie's drive worked great from the instant I plugged it in, and it's been through some pretty rough handling.

But since I last purchased a LaCie product, they've been infected by the bizarre impulse to supply a suite of programs designed to help you manage backups, journal your files and allow some limits to sharing when using "sneakernet". Fair enough. Two major problems. The installation program is highly cryptic and secretive about its intention to load these programs on your computer and the programs are just awful.

How awful? Think pre-iPod mp3 player management software, or some of the more intrusive anti-malware code that your less sophisticated friends buy and which turns out to be harder to remove than the most persistent virus. The "Genie" backup solution helpfully rebuilt my desktop after blowing it away, only now, post-Genie, I can't right-click icons, I can't see my taskbar and I can't open new explorer windows. If you're going to feature a piece of software that's designed for mass use by unsophisticated users why go cheap? All it's going to do is make people very very angry at you.

I've managed to undo the worst of the depredations visited on my system by LaCie's aggressive and buggy software. My drive is still oddly partitioned into two 500 gb NTFS partions (why? the manual and the installer are silent) but otherwise it seems to be working just fine.

So if this drive looks like a good deal, be sure to factor in the cost of four hours of your time spent undoing the blitzkrieg assault on your system that LaCie seems hell-bent on deploying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Large but worth it!
This is my second one, and I can count on it to be dependable. It's a bit large in my camera bag when on a trip, but it's worth every penny, since I've had HDs go bad.
