5.0 out of 5 stars ONLY FOR THOSE WHO LIKE ROUGH STREET BEATS
That's right, the beats (each produced by Barry G himself) are rough. And phat. And Old School. And gangsta. You can't call yourself a fan of rap unless you can feel the beats on this album. This is what started it all.

This album is one of Grapetree Records' earliest releases, and is sadly hard-to-get. After listening to this, you'll want to hear more of Barry. And...

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst cd ever made
Yeah, if there happens to be one other person besides my friends and the other guy who wrote a review on Barry G, who knows who he is, I would be very surprised. This is quite possibly the worst cd ever made. I hate to admit that I do still own it. But I only bust it out on special ocassions, like when I'm depressed and want to laugh, or when I want to make other people...

And the only other album I've heard that he's featured on is Controverse All-Star by Lil' Raskull, which he produced three tracks on. But he hasn't done anything since. That's six years. Let's hope a Grapetree staff member is reading this right now and decides to bring Barry G back.

But back to the album itself. Barry G delivers his message of hope to the streets over rugged gangsta beats. Some of the best tracks on this are: "I got 'em" which he presents his song from the viewpoint of a giant. Here's a sample of the lyrics:

"Barry G is a giant/walking through the land of the lost/at any cost/saving plenty souls like penticost"

Another great track is "Step to Jehova". It talks about how you don't want to face God as a non-believer when you die. This track has perhaps the most rugged beat on the album.

Finally, "Ain't nothin'" is a wothwhile track. It talks about how as a believer, never let anything change your mind about your faith.

As I understand, this cd is on "Limited Availability". I strongly suggest purchasing this album. It'll put some Old School in your collection. If you like anything by Lil' Raskull, you'll love this album. Check it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still Stands Up After 14 Years, September 8, 2009

Barry G * Rugged Witness (Grapetree, 1995)

"Ain't Nothin'" hooked me right away with the smooth as silk ISLEY BROTHERS sample. "Jesus Pleaser (remix)" reminds you of the flow and style of the current Rap hits on Mainstream radio stations. "I'm a Jesus pleaser, cause I love pleasin' Jesus ...", sticks in your head and makes you real glad that this brother is back on the scene.
Just like early P.I.D. reminds of RUN DMC, Barry G fits right in with your NOTORIOUS BIGS and CRAIG MACKS.

Picks: I Got 'Em/ Step To Jehovah/ Ain't Nothin'

1.0 out of 5 stars The worst cd ever made, October 12, 2004
This review is from: Rugged Witness (Audio CD)
Yeah, if there happens to be one other person besides my friends and the other guy who wrote a review on Barry G, who knows who he is, I would be very surprised. This is quite possibly the worst cd ever made. I hate to admit that I do still own it. But I only bust it out on special ocassions, like when I'm depressed and want to laugh, or when I want to make other people laugh. I bought the cd at a youth camp that he was performing at. I met Barry and he signed my cd cover and everything. I can't believe that me and my friends used to think he was good. Anyways, Barry G, if you're out there reading this by some huge chance, no offense bro, I got nothing but love for you baby.
