5.0 out of 5 stars Rugrats Blast Off, May 19, 2011
ISBN 0590129457 - Printed in the U.S.A. Marked "RL1 004-007." Paperback, 22 pages. Published by Scholastic Inc. in 1997. By Stephanie St. Pierre, illustrated by George Ulrich.

When the Pickles family heads out for a trip to the country, the Rugrats know they're in for a long drive and Chuckie is definitely not looking forward to it because he gets car sick. Tommy suggests that they should play a game to make him feel better. They'll pretend that they're on a trip to outer space! When Angelica finds out what they're up to, she graciously agrees to play along with them - but only if she's the Supreme Commander. Things go well until the car/spaceship stops to have a picnic/explore the asteroid. While exploring, the Rugrats discover aliens/other kids and run for their lives, but enter the wrong spaceship/car and worry as the aliens/other parents lean over them. Things work out, just in the nick of time.

The Rugrats rock. Always. The thing, the "hook," about the TV show is that the kids tend to make X out of Y when they overhear things. That isn't here. In fact, here, the kids speak stunningly well. When I read Tommy saying "Shall we explore the asteroid, Commander?" I had to pause and think about that. It's out of character for the cartoon characters that I love, but I suppose some of their signatures traits might not translate well into books, so I've decided to overlook it. Still, it's a difference that you might care more about than I. Add the surprise of Angelica playing along and they almost seem like different little people altogether. What does remain from the cartoon is their vivid, even wild, imaginations. These kids seem to live in a world all their own, of their own making, and those pesky parents are often just interrupting a perfectly good life with things like picnics. I love these kids! The illustrations are a bit more pastel than usual, but the surprise appearance of the other family (there's a look-alike for every Pickles family member) more than made up for that. Since it isn't mentioned in the text, it actually caught me by surprise, something kids' books rarely do.
