4.0 out of 5 stars The Rugrats before the decline
As I write this review I can't help but remember when I loved the Rugrats. It was once my favorite show in television as a kid. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not Great But Not Bad! And At Least Kimi Isn't In It!
I love Rugrats its one of my favorite cartoons and I even think its better than The Simpsons which is also a good cartoon! The Rugrats movie the first of the theatrical movies is not as good as the original Nick cartoon but it is pretty cute and I hought that I woudn't like the new character Dil but even though he is not as good a chracter as Tommy, Dill is ok. 4.0 out of 5 stars The Rugrats before the decline, October 2, 2005
This review is from: The Rugrats Movie (DVD)
As I write this review I can't help but remember when I loved the Rugrats. It was once my favorite show in television as a kid. And when the movie came out in theaters I was more excited than anyone would've imagined. I was a huge fan. The TV show has decreased in quality, but the movie still remains solid. It introduced a new character to the series, and to this day still remains the greatest adventure that the rugrats have gone on.

Didi has recently found out she's pregnant, and that means Tommy is getting a baby brother. When Tommy's new brother Dil is born, things around the house change. Dil begins to receive a bit more attention than Tommy, and he's always loud and obnoxious... the way Tommy used to be when he was first born. Phil, Lil, and Chuckie can't stand him and neither can Angelica.

In the meantime, Stewie has made a new invention. A Reptar mobile (Reptar is the Rugrats version of "Godzilla" and the babies' hero). When Stu and Didi head out for a while, they leave the kids home alone with Grandpa. If you've watched the show you know Grandpa is not a good baby sitter... he always falls asleep, and that's what he does here.

The babies see this Reptar mobile and decide to hop inside and play around. Angelica (the rambuncious three year old brat) is trying to watch her show and so she is very annoyed. She gives the babies the boot (literally) and the Reptar wagon suddenly slides out the front door. Tommy has little idea how to control it, and neither do his friends. Phil and Lil, however, don't see it as such a bad thing. To them it's a chance to take new-born baby Dil back to the hospital.

With the babies gone, Angelica can finally find peace... except there's a problem. When she gave the babies the boot they took her favorite doll Cynthia with them! Now Angelica decides she must find them, and so she saddles up the family dog, Spike. And Spike ends up running out the front door... dragging Angelica along.

The result? The babies getting lost in the forest far away from home. When the parents find out, they go on a large search for the babies.

I suppose what got me to really like this movie was the adventure of it. The little imagination of these babies is amazing! The movie even begins with a little rendition of "Indiana Jones" as they're actually exploring thier house. But when they really AREN'T in a place that's their home, you can see just how brave they get.

Never mind how stupid the parents are (they NEVER learn from leaving the babies with Grandpa), the adventure is exciting. Especially when Phil and Lil manage to let a bunch of monkey's take Dil away. Soon Tommy really IS the one responsible for his brother. The movie is funny in many places, and it's songs are enlightening. Any child will enjoy this movie to death.

Unlike it's sequel, the babies get into some trouble that isn't too far beyond their control. By that I mean, the Reptar mobile is just a wagon, and not some HUGE GIGANTIC THING DESTROYING THE CITY! This adventure is more REAL than in the sequel, "Rugrats in Paris".

And while Dil isn't the most likeable character, it's unrealistic to think he can do as much as the other babies can (he can't walk, mind you). It would help if Dil was as adventureous as his brother, but considering he's only a few weeks old, we can get by.

The animation is top notch, and very vivid and vibrant. Much better than the television show ever was. It's just incredible.

If there were problems I'd say it's this: It is certainly not a movie for grown ups. If you grew up with the Rugrats as I did, you will probably like this movie. However, grown ups who didn't grow up with the Rugrats, will be annoyed by their kids loving to watch the film. It is clearly aimed at the younger audience.

It's a great movie. Especially for your kids, and especially for nostalgia. This was an incredible movie eight years ago, and remains a good movie for your kids today.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Great But Not Bad! And At Least Kimi Isn't In It!, September 15, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Rugrats Movie [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I love Rugrats its one of my favorite cartoons and I even think its better than The Simpsons which is also a good cartoon! The Rugrats movie the first of the theatrical movies is not as good as the original Nick cartoon but it is pretty cute and I hought that I woudn't like the new character Dil but even though he is not as good a chracter as Tommy, Dill is ok. I agree with the last reviewer that Kimi who was introduced in the second movie is not a good Rugrats character. I applaud that the makers of Rugrats decided to add an Asian character but why did they have to make her so irritating? And she is a copycat character too, she seems to me to be Tommy, Phil, Lil and Angelica all rolled into one super annoying person and instead of adding Kimi I wish they had just made Susie a more used character or had made Kimi less obnoxious!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good movie based on the Nickelodeon series, April 8, 1999

The Rugrats movie was fairly good. It was better than alot of animated movies. It was about Tommy,Chuckie,Phil,Lil, and the new baby,Dil. So the parents are giving Dil lots of attention and then the babies decide to take him back to the hospital to get their money back. They take Stu's new wacky invention called the Reptar Wagon. And on their way they get lost in the woods and facing obstacles on their way. Like I said it was fairly good for a kid's movie. I gave 4 stars out of 5

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad!!, May 23, 2001

This movie was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Between the annoying sound track of the babies singing...... and the very thin and boring plot, this movie was horrible. It begins when Didi has a baby named Dil, and they get lost in the woods on the border of town (which I am sure did not exist in the show)and they try to find their way back. The Grown-ups save them. The end. It was one of the most predictable story plot I have ever heard.

If I were you, I'd skip this one, and see Rugrats in Paris, unless you are a huge Rugrats fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rugrats the Movie, August 21, 2005

It's a wild ride as expected. Definitely requires
parental guidance for the preschool to preteen set.
Would recommend for the non-prudish, healthy family.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first and the best Rugrats film!, July 24, 2005
This review is from: The Rugrats Movie (DVD)
This is the first Rugrats movie ever to be made, and it sure is a good one! It`s got a WONDERFUL storyline, and is extremely funny and humorus! In this movie,Tommy has to handle one of the hardest points in life:being a brother(because Dill is born in this movie). It touched me cause sometimes I wasn`t really fully comfortable when my baby brother was born cause I was used to being an only child.I felt left out cause he was the center of attention.Every body thought he was so cute and funny. So thats what Tommy goes through, and it leads to him and his friends going on a big adventure!I`m sure you`ll love this movie or atleast think it was worth your time!Hope my review helped! Here`s a saying that they use alot in this movie:A babys got to do what a babys got to do!

P.s.-You also might want to see "Rugrats In Paris",which is the sequal to "The Rugrats Movie"!

My thirteen month old sits in front of the TV smiling at the screen each time we put this movie on. The only time she moves is when the music begans and then she dances in a circle.

This movie is terrible. The songs stunk and the overall plot was not well thought out. I gave it the first star because you had too and gave the second star because baby Dil was cute.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Biggest Event in Rugrats History, April 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rugrats Movie [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Though the Rugrats started out on Nickelodeon they made a huge leap from when they started somewhere after 1990 to now. In the movie Angelica and Spike find out Angelica's favorite doll cynthia is missing. Angelica thinks the babies Tommy Chuckie Phil and Lil and Dil have her doll. Through out the adventure in the reptar wagon which was supposed to be shiped off to Japan The babies set out to find the wizard who lives in the woods. This story also makes a bad relationship between the babies. Phil Lil and Chuckie don't like Tommy as much because of Dil. This is a movie you don't want to miss.
