Had the same problem as Joe. After less than a years' use the float mechanism turns on the pump but when water level receeds the switch sticks on so pumps stays on.

Garbage!,
This review is from: Rule 40A Marine Rule-A-Matic Plus Bilge Pump Switch (Mercury Free) (Sports)
I replaced my old bilge pump float switch with this one last summer. It just failed in a permanently on mode over the last month and toasted a brand new battery.

be cautious with your order, the picture is wrong for what you will receive,

I was looking for a direct replacment, what i received is not the same as the picture shows. I received a Rule Model 40A. This functions the same but is very different in size, I am using this new one in hope it is better than the one in the picture. The pump switches are not very durable, the warranty is 2 years and they fail right around 2 years. Mine have not failed within the warranty period. If your boat has a boss to mount this the new one is larger than the one in the picture and requires significant work to install
