Will find a fine home in any quilter's library,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rule-Breaking Quilts (Paperback)
Rule-Breaking Quilts offers tips on how to use pattern-free, template-free and pin-free techniques and just 6 fat quarters to achieve superior quilt results. From ten sample quilt projects to using the author's stack-slash-and-move sewing techniques, this provides a revolutionary, different approach to quilt making and will find a fine home in any quilter's library.

Useful techniques, unappealing quilts,
By Crafty reader (Ottawa, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rule-Breaking Quilts (Paperback)
The good - The quilts in this book are made from 6 fat quarters, which makes them very accessible. The book taught me several new techniques, including how to easily sew curves, and the lessons build nicely from one to the next. Lastly, it was interesting to try making an unstructured quilt.
The not-so-good - The author didn't get rid of the quilt police. To properly construct these quilts you still have to be matchy-matchy with your seams (using curved intersections and blocks that are not necessarily uniform in size). The quilts themselves are not to my taste. In fact, the book does not show a single quilt that I wish I had made and/or want to try. FYI, the quilt featured on the cover is misleading in that it includes printed fabrics that are made to appear as if they were sewed together. These are the sections that includes the author's and publisher's names and the horizontal panel immediately above. The in-between - it is virtually impossible to anticipate what your finished quilt will look like until it is sewn together; unless you've made so many of them you know what works for you and what doesn't. Some people will love that, others will not.

At last a book for those who fear the Quilt Police will find out that they do not make perfect quilts. Well written, directions are clear. Can't wait to start.

Finally, the perfect invitation to step away from the patterns and into your own creativity. The books approach allows you to challenge yourself to evade the "quilt police" through a series of technique lessons using just 6 fat quarters. A delightful approach and outline for an independent or small group study. I can't wait to get started. Highly recommended for quilters of all levels. Fun!

This book is filled with tricks, tools and techniques for those of us reaching fo bring movement and freedom to our quilts in ways that straight lines and tidy corners and points simply can't. It kind of feels like being given a set of pneumatic hammers and drills to use carving marble instead using a tiny chisel and hammer. While I am all in favor of those who find their joy in neat, crisp tidy patterns repeated over and over, for a slash and burn quilter like myself this book is a gift from the Muses!

Thank heavens someone finally wrote a book that makes perfect sense to those of us who are looking for new ways to make quilts. Just what I was looking for in a quilting book for inspiration.
