Excellent Insight,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Rule of Saint Augustine (Paperback)
This is a delightful little book. The insight of the introduction is wonderful, and the translation is faithful. The Rule itself is inspiring, and it becomes clear to the reader why Augustine has had such a lasting impact on Western monastic spirituality and, on a much broader level, Western Theology. This is a must have for any theological library.

This review is from: Monastic Rules: of Saint Augustine (Augustine (New City Press)) (Paperback)
Excellent resource. The Rule of Augustine, one of the first to be written in the Western tradition and a treasured legacy for many who have followed his spiritual path through the centuries.Augustine had in mind a group of like-minded individuals intent to establish the love of God as the primary aspiration guiding their lives beyond conversion. Originally intended for lay "servants of God", in both versions for male and female, it became widely practiced in the monastic tradition of the Church. Flexible and well structured, the Rule can be integrated into various designs of active or contemplative community life, as historical records have shown. In that respect, the reality of more fluid situations and complex ideological trends in modern society makes Augustine's Rule, in its main precepts, an optimal resource for the "needs of the journey" experienced by all members of the pilgrimage Church. Individuals in our time, from all walks of life, may reflect upon The Rule and sense the breath of the Spirit that blows unexpectedly around us and through all times. Those who may hear a voice in their heart stirring aspirations for a life dedicated to that fundamental search will heed his exhortation: "follow the Lord in the company of those to whom he speaks wisdom" (Conf.XIII, 19, 24).
