An excellent value in old-school geometry instruction!

This short book helped me energize my class with some great constructions that are quite simple once you get the notation figured out.

As soon as I recieved this book I took my compass and ruler to draw the figures and I have had a really good time.

I have to teach a few basic constructions for a state test. I have taught them pretty much the same way for years. I teach them the way I was taught. Then I bought this book. This short book helped me energize my class with some great constructions that are quite simple once you get the notation figured out. My students were thrilled with some of the more complex constructions and I think they walked away with a better understanding of the way constructions work. I also used some of the basic shaped like the hexagon construction to reinforce the associated properties. I have never had so much success keeping the students attentive during these lessons.I have not really investigated other such books, but for me, and for my students, this book served as a great resource. Short - effective - informative. In fact - so small that I can tuck the book, a graph paper notebook and a compass in my backpack and not use up much space. One problem - I did spend quite a bit of time doodling with the book during faculty meetings.

...but long since forgot. It's a fun book, both compromised by its size and defined by it. It's unlikely many people would buy a "big" book on ruler and compass exercises, but something like this perhaps. Recommended with the proviso that it is a small work, not complete.

.

Andrew Sutton has a "Wooden Book, " which is part of an extended series of instructional books in an undersized format,
only slightly larger than a trade paperback as is common for novels.

The material covered is extensive, but the small print and small book format is a major deterrent.

Another difficulty with the format is that in any category of construction, involving say, Circles, Straight Lines or Parallel or Perpendiculars, is that for each category the simplest constructions are immediately followed by highly complex constructions. Furthermore, only the very briefest of instructions are given. In many instances, only 1 or 2 sentences explain what is to be done to construct.

Still, the author should be credited for his knowledge of the subject. He obviously knows it, and the book is a worthwhile addition to my collection, because with some experience using the simpler books, I will be able to understand what author Sutton is referring to with his brief instructions. I think this book, which is not very costly at all, would make a fine complement to some of the other books which are in larger format, better diagrammed, and with more complete instructions.
The at least, owing to their larger print format, do not have quite the extensive collection of figures.

In the final analysis, this is a book that only an adult can easily comprehend. A child, say...8 years to 12 years would probably find the instructions impossible to follow.

I do like it, and can recommend it highly, but if a beginner gets this, he should have other and simpler books.

Ruler and Compass gives you many pages full of different geometric constructions organized based on what you want to do. Finding the center of a triangle? It's in there. What to draw a 9-sided polygon? It's in there too.

I hadn't done any geometric drawing since I was in middle school, but this scratched my itch to learn more. Luckily, the author provides clear instructions on his notation for each construction. I've not had any problem interpreting the drawings.

Additionally, he mentions many other sources of information to look up during the book if you'd like to learn more. It'd have been nice if there was also a bibliography to put that information in one place, but wasn't enough of a problem to deduct a star.

As a professional artist who is interested in using geometry in his work, I found this little book a very good, almost complete source of solutions to many problems that I am facing from time to time.
I was good in geometry in school so I appreciate the condensed, coded way the author chose to write the instructions for each construction, no more is needed. I think that it can work even for a beginner though, it's made simple and easy without unnecessary information jamming in.
This is a book for practical use, if one is interested in a more complete mathematical analysis of each construction perhaps you should choose something else. But for what it is made for, it is an excellent effort.

It contains concise, beautifully illustrated and exceptionally well explained geometric constructions -- that is, using the traditional tools of compass, straight edge and pencil to create beautiful, perfectly executed geometric shapes.

An enginging and deceptively simple book that will have you reaching for your compass and straight edge to try some of these constructions. Highly recommend .

I ordered five of the Wooden Books to study Sacred Geometry for my new artwork. I will be adding more of these incredible books.
