From the author of Games of the Hangman comes a story of international intrigue featuring Hugo Fitzduane, the Irish ex-soldier and war photographer who killed the terrorist madman known as the Hangman. Targeted by the Hangman's allies, Fitzduane finds he must take the fight to his enemies--or be hunted down himself.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The best thrillers are those in which events flow from the story inevitably, with the author's work of manipulating the plot and supplying necessary narrative information remaining invisible. This is O'Reilly's feat in his fast-moving second novel starring Irish counterterrorist Hugo Fitzduane. Even the premise is based on action that has gone before: Fitzduane is being hunted by the Yaibo, a group of Japanese assassins under obligation to avenge the death of the Hangman (killed by Fitzduane in Games of the Hangman). The Yaibo are also tied to the highly visible (and very shady) Namaka Corporation, which has been implicated in a brutal Tokyo killing. After being attacked in Ireland, Fitzduane travels to Tokyo, where he gets caught up in a plot that touches the CIA and reaches back to the postwar occupation of Japan. The cast, main and secondary, are likable, hateable and memorable; his complex plot unfolds effortlessly, lit by successive action scenes that explode like a string of firecrackers. Fitzduane, a reluctant but formidable warrior, weathers every twist and turn like a modern Odysseus, desiring nothing more than to go home in peace. If this Irish writer is smart, he won't allow his hero to achieve his ambition too soon.

From Library Journal

Fans of Nelson DeMille and David Morrell will be overjoyed: With this second novel and sequel to Games of the Hangman (Berkeley, 1992), O'Reilly joins the selective list of must-buy intrigue authors. Well written, well paced, and delightfully readable, this novel offers major and minor characters who are believable and three-dimensional if not necessarily likable. Hugo Fitzduane, Anglo-Irish nobleman and retired war photographer/warrior, is attacked and left for dead while horseback riding with his beloved three-year-old son, Boots. In Games of the Hangman, Hugo had killed the mastermind of international terrorist groups, and now the Cutting Edge, a Japanese-based group, seeks revenge for their leader's murder. Hugo's romantic attachments lend a nice touch of humanity to the text. Librarians who do not purchase Rules are denying their readers a first-rate treat by an excellent author.

Our Hero Fitzduane thought his war with terrorism ended with the defeat of the hangman but in the world of international terrorism nothing is forgotten! He and his family are targeted for death by the hangman's sadistic lover,a female japanese terrorist.Fitzduane must take the battle to her on her own tuff which is Japan. This novel gives us scenic and very bloody tour of Japan as our hero battle terrorists, yakuza(japanese gangsters) and lethal betrayal in his own ranks.Another great atmospheric spy thriller!

4.0 out of 5 stars O'Reilly Rules!, August 23, 2000

This review is from: Rules of the Hunt (Paperback)
I've stumbled across "Games of the Hangman" by accident and was hooked by the non-stop action. Now 5 years later, I stumbled across "Rules of the Hunt" and am enjoying, once again the very dangerous adventures of Hugo Fitzduane. Indeed looking forward to reading the "Devil's Footprint" (look for my review). Mr. O'Reilly's prose is straightforward and clear with a very tight plot. The characters come to life and the action sizzles. Not for the weak of heart. Terrorism is a very real threat that Mr. O'Reilly brings to light in all it's dark reality.

This book starts out slow but builds to an incredible level of tension. You will stay up late to finish this book. Do NOT miss the second book to the Fitzduane series.
