Book Description

April 1989 Sail to Win
The racing rules of sailing explained. Get ahead of the competition with this straight talking, practical guide to the racing rules 2008-2012

Rules in Practice is primarily for competitive sailors who race in keelboats and dinghies.  The Racing Rules of Sailing apply to all forms of sailboat racing.  The author – a member of the International Sailing Federation - looks at 100 key situations that occur on the racecourse – both championship and club racing.  Unlike the competition, Bryan looks at each situation from your viewpoint, the helmsman. It summarizes what each may, must, or cannot do.

Armed with this information you will have the confidence to exploit your rights to the full, on the water and in the protest room.

It features a special analysis of the latest rule changes and has been extended to contain the very latest Rules and Appendices in full.

From the Back Cover

The Rules in Practice is essential for any competitive sailor.

Bryan Willis looks at key situations that repeatedly occur on the championship and club racecourse.  Unlike other books on racing rules, Bryan looks at each situation from your viewpoint and places you in each of the boats involved, so you know your rights and obligations; what you may, must, or mustn’t do, and shows the critical questions which will determine the ‘facts found’, should the incident end up in a protest room.

Armed with this knowledge you will not only avoid breaking rules and taking penalties, but you can exploit your rights to the full to gain places on the racecourse or present your case if there is a protest.

The Rules in Practice features a special analysis of the rule changes and contains the current ISAF Rules and Appendices in full.

Get ahead of the competition with this straight talking, practical guide to the racing rules.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Look Making Rules Easy to Remember, December 27, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I grew up in a sailing club that was really into the rules of racing and I can always remember the mini-dramas after the race while the race committee was deliberating protests. Rule books and those cute little plastic models were all part of the action. Fast forward to last summer and 30 years away from small boat racing. I had forgotten more rules than I remembered and was obviously out of date on the advances and changes in the rules. The club is not as much into the rules as it used to be, but this was a great book to help me get back on the water and stay out of hot water. If only I had bought the book BEFORE week one of sailing, I might have saved the bow a bit of fiberglass.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different, useful way of looking at it, October 10, 2011
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book new in April of 2009 for $23.51, delivered. There is no need to get a new copy.

It is a different twist on the rules, looking at a situation or incident and reviewing the applicable rules. It is very useful to have the rules in context this way. He can show how different rules come into play at different points in the situation, so you know what you have to be watching to know which one applies at each moment.

He goes through each scenario in detail from each boat's point of view, citing applicable rules at each point in the sequence, and detailing each boat's responsibilities and options.

Illustrations and the writing are clear and understandable. Even with all the detail, it is only 92 pages, plus the free included rules section. In contrast, the classic by Dave Perry, "Understanding the RRS," is 250 pp. plus the rules. (That is a great book, too.) This one is quicker, easier, with a higher ratio of pictures.
