One of the most unique film scores of all time.,
By Sterling Gillette (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Rumble Fish: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Like apparently many other people, I purchased the soundtrack in 1983 on the strength of Stewart Copeland's name (and some rave reviews of the soundtrack), without having seen the movie. And, like many others, I wore out my vinyl album and had to buy the cassette, etc. It's that good. The music is unique, but very approachable. My personal favorite track is the bluesy "Our Mother is Alive"; it's both desperately sad and somehow optimistic. The other top track is "Brothers on Wheels", which famously incorporates the sound of a ticking clock and an industrial pile-driver into the percussion, backing up a bouncy acoustic-guitar melody. But even the "happy" tracks are tinged with sadness. I eventually did see the movie, and I do love it, but be warned: The score itself is actually way undermixed. At times you can barely hear it, which seems like an unconscionable choice on the filmmakers' part. The movie also uses alternate versions of some tracks, so even if you already own the video, do yourself a favor and buy the soundtrack on CD.

A milestone - simply fantastic,

I have never seen the movie, don't really want to because the breathtaking music on this cd has created incredible images and moods in my mind for years. It is far from a simple "soundtrack CD" -- it is an incomparable percussive symphony bursting with energy and imagination. Like others, I wore out my original LP version long ago and it stands as my favorite work of Stewart's career. Highest recommendation.

I would just like to say...read my fellow reviewers and then buy this CD. I feel that it is a masterpiece of imagination and percussion that has certainly stood the test of time. It is strange that I do not tire of this work. This is probably due to its rich and complex nature. I personally find that it is fantastic driving music. This is now the third time I have bought this...one album (which I recorded) and this is the second CD (first one wore out). Stop listening to me...buy this CD and listen to the music !!!

One of the top 5 soundtracks of all time,

Rumblefish was the starting point of launching Copeland on a very successful post-Police career as a soundtrack artist. While he has written many other successful tracks (most notable Talk Radio) Rumblefish stands alone as a work of tremendous energy and originality. I think that Stewart must have had many creative ideas that didn't fit with the Police that he needed to express. There is not a weak track on the disc.If you like percussive music, this is a must. Having Stan Ridgway on a track is a nice bonus, too. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

The Search for the Rumble Fish Soundtrack,

This review is from: Rumble Fish: The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
When the "Rumble Fish" movie came out, I was very excited to see it. But even more, I looked forward to hearing the soundtrack upon knowing that it was by Stewart Copeland. Recognizing his name alone as being the drummer in the Police, I made up my mind to buy it without even knowing what it would sound like. I knew it would be good because it would feature his brilliant percussion. I used to listen to my vinyl record all the time--especially with headphones. Unlike other reviewers though, mine didn't wear out. :) It's very rare to hear and enjoy an album cover to cover; this one flows extremely well. It's even better to know that Francis Ford Coppola preferred to make movies like this and "The Outsiders" rather than the Godfather trilogies. (info from "Inside the Actors Studio") Can you believe that?! See Rumble Fish and treat yourself to the soundtrack--it's phenomenal.

I watched this movie eight times before I realized that it was more for the music than anything else. I bought the soundtrack on vinyl and wore that out. I bought it again on cassette and wore that one out in my Walkman. Get the CD - now.

well, the clock tick mentioned in another review compliments the "acute perception" of the motorcycle boy, whose days are stretched out, and who, though it's never specifically disclosed in the film, lives in a hot and wearing geography. the lyrics to the "box me in" track are, contrary to info in another review, included, specifically in the closing credits. the musical arc from the climax scene to the scrolling melody of the credits is smoothly poetic in the movie... the absence of the female lead inconspicuously conspicuous. as someone else said, the music does seem to exist in its own reality, as does the film, without dependence or reference to other works, except perhaps the film itself, which makes this sadly beautiful oasis effect that drew me to first the movie and then the disk. if you like one, you'll like the other, and each can appreciated on its own.

A wonderful polyrhythmical soundtrack,

The main idea of this outstanding soundtrack is the elapsing of time: notice the use of triangle, clock tick and rim shot in most of the tracks. The particular stereo effects, the syncopation and the use of irregular accents create a wrapping atmosphere in which you can completely lose yourself closing your eyes. Some tracks need to be listened to with an high quality headset or an hi-fi system to appreciate the stereo effects and all instruments(2. Tulsa Tango - triangle and rim shot). I think it is one of the best Copeland's performance. Other remarkable tracks are: 3.Our Mother is Alive, 5.Biff gets stomped by Rusty James(irregular roll),6. Brothers on Wheels (for its atmosphere)

I recently saw the movie for the first time, which I thought was fantastic. Couldn't get the soundtrack out of my head for the next several days, so I decided I had to buy it. Got it on iTunes for $9.99, as one of the other reviewers suggested, and it was easy to burn to CD from there. Definitely don't pay what these people are asking, even though the soundtrack is so good, it would be worth it, if there was no other alternative.
