By Susan Shea on September 16, 2013
Format: Paperback
This is a great little book of poems from Maulana Rumi, translated in a very approachable and heartfelt way. I find reading these poems very inspiring - after reading them, I sometimes get infected by the bug and feel like writing some poems or songs myself. I was interested to see some familiar poems that I've also read other translations of - some by Arberry (Mystical Poems of Rumi), Nicholson(Selected Poems from the Divani Shamsi Tabriz), Shahram Shiva (Hush, Don't Say Anything to God) and Khalili (Rumi: Fountain of Fire), all of which I have enjoyed, as well as a few repeats from one of Mafi & Kolin's other fine books (Rumi: Hidden Music), and also a few that I recognized from Coleman Barks' "versions". I find Mafi's renditions very user-friendly, and - as far as I can tell not being Persian-literate) - mostly true to the sense of the original text (aside from a few poems that may have lost something significant in the translation for more details, and some clear perspective on the subject of comparative translations, I found an excellent review at [...]

Overall, I would recommend this to anyone interested in mystical poetry, as well as convinced Rumi fans. It's one of my favorite books for bite-sized inspiration before bed.

THIS BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION OF RUMI'S POEMS AND SAYINGS WAS TRANSLATED BY TWO WOMEN--HIGHLY UNUSUAL. THEIR SENSITIVE AND TRUE TO FORM TRANSLATIONS SEND THE READER INTO BLISS.
I READ IT QUITE OFTEN AND GIVE IT AS GIFTS, ESPECIALLY TO FEMALE FRINDS, WHO LOVE IT.
