5.0 out of 5 stars we are hiphop...........
Ruminations is an oustanding book. Where there is no vision...."the people will perish." Kris gives us his vision, inspires us to awaken our own vision, and encourages us to continually increase our awareness and personal power. It's amazing that so few people realize that thought, word, and action are the fundamental tools we use to create our own unique destiny. He has...

3.0 out of 5 stars excellent beginning tome for hip-hop's philosopher--
this is a very good book, and recommended for any fan of hip-hop music and culture. it is written by one of hip-hop's most articulate elder statesmen, Kris Parker aka KRS-One. In this book he puts forth basic ideas about self-empowerment and economic and creative independence, called "Inner City Metaphysics". He addresses both sides of the Reparations controversy. He...

He has been telling us this for years, as have many other great Teachers! When ya'll gonna listen!! Simple universal truths consistently applied is all we need to advance as people regardless of our differences. Most people are not able to apply this vision in their daily lives because of laziness, fear, and social conditioning. Heroes have discipline. The clarity in this book is phenomenal. For those of you who are searching for a way to liberate your soul...to express your Self and be your Self..this book will help you in your journey. Many people in our society are living day to day in a life of reaction, a life they hate, a life they never planned for, yet fell victim to someone elses plan. Because of ignorance, most people are mental slaves trapped in an endless cycle of poverty, misery and negativity/niggativity. We in Hiphop reevaluate this whole United States of America, because we don't like what we see. We have higher expectations. We expect more of ourselves than any institution in this country could ever expect of us. This is why we're dissatisfied with the performance of many individuals who call themselves "leaders." It takes more than graduate school degrees and high ranking government positions to impress the Hiphop community, let alone lead us, it takes: skills, conviction, and intellect to be held in high esteem by us. The spoken word pieces, message from Cornell West, and Hiphop lectures on the CD are an excellent addition to the book. Of course, Kris eloquently illuminates our artform of Hiphop, our strategy to break the chains of mental slavery, free our minds, and evolve into civilized human beings because after all: We decide what Hiphop is and what it isn't, not anyone else.

Peace...I too am Hiphop....Join this movement Y'all!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars great read, August 25, 2005
This review is from: Ruminations (Hardcover)
The Blast Master has once again brought forth an education in Hiphop. KRS-ONE's love for the Hiphop culture and movement is best described in his book Ruminations. I found it to be a very interesting and dynamic read. For those that doubt the skills and knowledge of an Emcee that has been laying vocals from Street corners to world stages is mistaken when you claim his albums are "crap" and patrons demanded thier money back at live shows could be further from the truth. I have been to several KRS-ONE shows(from Chicago, New Orleans, New york, Los Angeles, Austin, Houston and beyond) and in my experience I have never seen a crowd so enthused or invigorated. Over the past few years his rhyme styles have elevated. A truly great Emcee never has to rely on "GREAT BEATS" but moreso on lyrical content. KRS writes rhymes for the educated and enlightened listener. HIP-POP music lovers need not apply, this style the KRIS style is way beyond your level of thinking.

Wow, ADL123, do you believe everything the media tells you? I mean seriously, there is a chapter in this book about the spiritual meaning of 9/11! And nothing even closely related to that quote is to be found! Even if he said that, the context of what he really meant would be way over your head anyways. This book is outstanding, he barely even talks about the rap scene until the last two chapters. So many things he pointed out in this book have caused me to change the way I view things in life. KRS is an incredible mind and figure, and it's sad that when he says something that's taken out of context it's the only way he ever can get even a shred of attention from the media and our society. And Kris always has something important to say, regarding this secular world of ours or beyond.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dope, insightful, March 18, 2005
This review is from: Ruminations (Hardcover)
A book that really makes you think. A good beginning as a published author for Kris. As to the klowns that gave KRS 1 star, quit being a hater and realize that kris still is and always be one of the greatest emcees in hip hop history. The kat that hated on kris' last few album probably supports trash like Chingy and Nelly.

this is a very good book, and recommended for any fan of hip-hop music and culture. it is written by one of hip-hop's most articulate elder statesmen, Kris Parker aka KRS-One. In this book he puts forth basic ideas about self-empowerment and economic and creative independence, called "Inner City Metaphysics". He addresses both sides of the Reparations controversy. He also provides an expanded text for his "Science of Rap" manual for aspiring hip-hop performers.

There are negative-minded people out there that are attempting to besmirch KRS' reputation. but the artist's website addresses all negative rumors about his public comments at www.templeofhiphop.org

5.0 out of 5 stars One Step towards Understanding. One Giant Leap towards Univerisal Consciousness, July 22, 2005
This review is from: Ruminations (Hardcover)
For those of you that do not read Ruminations and listen to the person that gave the book one star, obviously you are afraid of improving yourself as well as your community. To read this book, one does not need prior knowledge of spirituality, reparations for African Americans, or even Hip-Hop history. However, this book is not for people that are stagnant and unwilling to learn. Nevertheless, if you are living in the Dark Ages and want to partake in the Hip-Hop Renaissance, then expand your mind to Ruminations and digest the smorgasbord for thought by KRS-ONE. On the contrary, if you are believing life is one big "bling, bling" party and don't take the time to think beyond one's needs, then continue a life of selfishness and at the moment lifestyle and there will come a time when you will wind up looking for such insight whether it be from KRS-ONE or other philosophers, teachers, scholars, meta-physicians to regain mental stability and repentance for one's negative thoughts and actions. Like they say, "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Buy the book and invest in the common good as well as yourself. You will be glad you have taken this positive step. Like Rakim stated on Follow the Leader, "I guess nobody told you a little knowledge is dangerous." One Love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hiphop Revolutionary, May 24, 2004
By
"n0v8" (Indianapolis, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ruminations (Hardcover)
Ruminations is eye opening & consciousness expanding. He discusses some concepts that I've thought about before and some that I never would have. He lays out plans for a sovereign Hiphop Nation that would stand indepent of the United States. Talk about revolutionary thinking! As always he's not afraid to put forth ideas that may not be popular. I highly recommend this book, really for everybody, but especially for anyone who cares about Hiphop Kulture or even just Rap. The last chapter is The Science of Rap, apparently updated and reprinted from an earlier KRS book.
I couldn't put this book down. I often get bored with books before finishing them, but not this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!, March 20, 2004

This is a wonderful read! This will be a great text book for college classes interested in inner-city thought as well as social philosophy.

There's a reason KRS ONE has lectured at Harvard and Yale, and there's a reason this book is introduced by a famous philosopher. It's a good book with many insights.

It's no Plato's Republic, but if Plato grew up in the South Bronx and climbed the ladder from rags to riches, this book is something he may have written.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great mind of today., November 12, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Ruminations (Hardcover)
Kris Parker, better known as KRS-One,has written an outstanding autobiography entitled Ruminations.Kris Parker brilliantly tells us about his rise in Hip-Hop from beginning to present. His book also talks about many current issues, and his views on the state of society today.Kris also touches on the birth of Hip-Hop culture and his significant role in it.Kris is one of the most influential names in Hip-Hop music of all time.KRS-One is viewed by many as nothing less than a legend in the Hip-Hop community.I believe this book is excellent to read even if you aren't in any way interested in Hip-Hop.Kris has very interesting views on where he feels our world will be in years to come. For example,he spends a good amount of time discussing the serious reforms needed in order to improve the living status of African Americans today. The knowledge being displayed in this book is incredible.Just listening to Kris express his views and thoughts about the future makes me believe that KRS-One is prophet like.Ruminations is an excellent book that does nothing less than feed the mind.
